Associated Content editors are faggots. The Eastern New Mexico Region hosts a rich variety of cultures. Cannon Air Force Base has brought a large population of individuals from Asian countries to the area, expanding the area's culture and providing the benefits of an intelligent, productive addition to area schools and businesses. In Curry County, Asians make up ten percent of the population, with many in the medical, academic, and restaurant services fields. Though there are some very good Asian restaurants in the area, the lack of interest by a largely white, fundamentalist Christian Republican majority keeps these establishments few in number. Besides, an Asian family, or anyone like myself who loves the tastes and smells of Asian foods, will want to have familiar foods and accessories in the home, so they will need an Asian grocery. Fortunately, there are some excellent Asian groceries in the Clovis area.

In Clovis itself, those seeking Asian groceries should start at K's Oriental, which is run by a wonderfully nice and helpful Korean woman who always has fresh, sweet rice cakes on hand. Oh yes, they are delicious. But besides sweet desserts, K's has just about anything one needs for the Asian kitchen. A wide variety of rice, noodles, teas, spices, vegetables, dried fish and meats, tofu, panko, nori, beans, soy products, falafel, beverages, snacks, chopsticks, woks and utensils, tableware, art, incense, and Japanese, Korean, Chinese, Thai, Lao, Malaysian, Singaporean, Filipino, Vietnamese, and Indian movies and music, can all be found in this snug little shop located at 1548 N Thornton St, just across the street from Clovis High School.

On the other side of town, at 917 N. Main St., Royal Oriental Grocery is run by a nice Christian Filipino couple. They have a smaller selection, but the basics and staples that are found in K's Oriental can also be found here. The main difference is that Royal sells more Asian music and movies, and the lady that runs this place makes a lot bigger variety of sweets! Sweet rolls and rice cakes, taro cakes, all kinds of sweet treats to be found on an almost daily basis. Indian food is the one thing that is a bit under represented in Clovis, despite the large population of Indian doctors. However, falafel, curry, lentils, chutney and various other Indian foods can still be found.

Asians make up an important part of the Eastern New Mexico Region population, and, though slightly under-served, the Asian population can find the groceries they need in Clovis. Enterprising readers might think of opening an Asian grocery to serve Portales and its Eastern New Mexico University students. But for now, two great Asian groceries exist in the Clovis/Cannon/Portales area. So visit K's Oriental or Royal Oriental Grocery today!
