Asking the Question: Do We Know the Difference Between Right and Wrong?

Daniel Freeman
The question of what is morally right and wrong has been a question posed by just about all philosophers. It has been asked by Kings and Queens of great nations throughout time. What does it mean really to ask yourself what is right and what is wrong? Is there the social standard for right and wrong?

The answer to that question basically is the question itself. Everything that you consider to be right and wrong is right and wrong. There can not be a standard for right and wrong because our society varies throughout the world so greatly that there can not be one thing right and one thing wrong. What is unacceptable somewhere is acceptable somewhere else.

A man who was born into a world where murder and violence is a normal part of life should generally be unable to see that someone else thinks it it morally wrong to take another life from somebody. This is the problem with our society trying to decide what is right and wrong. We have our judicial system saying you can not do this because of this. While, in other countries they say the opposite.

It really all boils down to the very beginning of each of our specific cultures. I have heard though it is not confirmed to me by any means, but the fact that there is a myth that several of the Arabic countries on our planet believe that stealing anything is ground to have your hands removed. Which side of this argument is right? And which side is Wrong? Is the thief who is stealing food for his family wrong for taking something without payment or even asking? Or is the judge who sentences the persons hands to be removed wrong for putting themselves in a position of god like proportion?

There are still cultures all over the world who behave in a manner like this. We as Americans forget that some people are unable to support themselves financially by any normal means and have to resort to stealing. We counteract this by putting laws in place to protect our own stuff. This does not mean that I am in support of not punishing people for stealing. But we need to look at every side of the story when dealing with right and wrong.

You can not blame a child raised into believing that a homosexual lifestyle is normal within our society if they are raised in that environment. To them and to many people it is normal. I am not saying this is wrong at all. Even in places where homosexuality is looked at as despicable, there are people who are raised to believe that it is normal as bread and butter. But that is the perspective you have to take when dealing with the issues of right and wrong. It is strictly based on personal experience and the surroundings that you have been placed in. Right and wrong is an individual state of mind and should be taken very seriously when trying to decide the moral standard for your area, your city, or even your country.
