Aspergillosis is a respiratory disease of birds caused by poor immune systems that are unable to handle Aspergillus. Aspergillus is a fungus that can be traced to almost anything in the environment, mainly where bird waste collect. It grows in warm and moist locations. The tiny spores of the fungus can be inhaled by air in poor ventilated and dusty areas, uncleanness, and confined spaces.
Parrots, mynahs and parakeets have a higher risk in developing this disease. Birds with aspergillosis show signs of difficult breathing, loss of appetite, constant drinking and urination, and possibility unexplained death. The fungus in aspergillosis, usually affects the trachea, voice box, air sacs, and lungs. In chronic cases, some of the bird's organs are affected leading the bird to wobble, seizures, and paralysis.
Diagnosing Aspergillosis can be very hard because the signs of disease are common in other diseases. A veterinarian can run tests such as radiographs, a blood count, and a chemistry panel. A specialized blood test can be used to find Aspergillus antibodies. However, this test can be unreliable and give a false results.
The common way to treating Aspergillosis is by using anti-fungal drugs that are taken in orally by injection or nebulizing. Some of these anti-fungal drugs are: terbinafine, flucytosine, and amphotericin B. Several drugs and therapy might also be included with treatment. Supplying oxygen, extra heat, tube feeding is often part of the overall treatment care as well. Sometimes, surgery might be needed to remove lesions.
You can lessen the risk of Aspergillosis by keeping a clean and well-ventilated area. Clean their cages regularly, including the bottom cage lining. Wash out their food and water dishes daily. Once a month clean their toys, perches, and any other items your bird uses. Give your bird a good nutritional diet that consists of fruits, vegetables, grains, and seeds.
It is unfortunate and sad when your pets develop an illness. To help your pet, be sure to have regular vet check-ups. Clean their environment regularly, daily if needed. Supply them with good healthy food and appropriate exercise. Don't keep your pet in spaces too small for them and/or lacking the proper airflow. By taking simple preventable measures, you might be able to enjoy your pet for a long time.
