Assessing Ethnic Issues in Today's America

Christina Armani
There are many ethnic issues that America needs to address as a nation. The three big ethnic issues in America are racism, discrimination, and lack of acceptance for non-Americans. As a first generation immigrant, I experienced all three of them growing up.

In school, I was always laughed at and teased because of my foreign looks. Today, I'm discriminated against when I apply for a job, since Americans prefer to hire other Americans. I even have a hard time making friends since Americans dislike foreigners and don't want to know me. Many people don't accept immigrants because they believe immigrants are inferior to Americans.

As a whole, Americans need to realize that people are people no matter where they come from, and they all need to be treated the same. No matter where you were born, you're a person with feelings and emotions and deserve to be treated with dignity and respect. Americans may believe that they're ethnically superior to others, but this isn't true at all. All ethnicities are equal, even if they're a little bit different on the outside.

Americans treat non-Americans differently than they treat other Americans, and this really needs to change. Americans also prefer to be friends with other Americans which is just plain unnatural. While it's fine to be proud of being an American, it's not fine to be disregarding or disrespecting other ethnicities.
The big problem is that Americans fear people of other ethnicities. While it's human nature to fear the unknown, there is no reason why people of other ethnicities should be unknown to Americans. Americans need to step out of their comfort zone and get to know people from other backgrounds. While it may be a little awkward at first, the end results are going to be well worth it.

These ethic issues have been addressed many times before. The question now is how to deal with them. The best way to resolve these issues are to stop being afraid of each other, learn to get along, and reconcile our differences. For starters, we need to understand each other, and learn about each other's histories and heritage. We need to learn how to work together as a whole instead of always trying to fight each other.
