Assessing the Growth of the Social Networking Business

Ana Montano
Social networking sites have exploded with popularity. There are all sorts, from the general like Myspace and Friendster, to the college-specific Facebook, even to business sites like LinkedIn, which aims to connect working professionals.

All these websites are taking advantage of people's natural desire to network. This new wave of internet business has opened the doors to a new kind of web business. This new fad has become widely recognized as the new medium that companies can use to advertise.

This is an exceptionally precise method of targeting an audience because the ads you see can be tailored for you. Behavior tracking has allowed companies to know what you are accessing and it strategically places ads when you visit Facebook. With a simple cookie that is automatically saved onto your computer, you are provided with options especially for you. If you were browsing for The Office on DVD on Amazon, and then you move on to other sites, you're likely to see a related ad next time you sign in to Facebook.

Additionally, social networking sites allow banner ads to have better relevance. If a company places an ad on a site like Myspace, they have a pretty good idea of what demographic groups are visiting. So if you are advertising for office supplies, it is a good idea to target the business social networking sites.

But there is something more unique about social networking sites than just their target market, and it's that it allows marketing to coexist flawlessly with a website you love and frequent. It is almost mandatory for recording artists to have Myspaces. It is a way to connect their fans and advertise their music. The same goes for movies, TV shows, and celebrities.

The bottom line is that advertisers want a piece of the pie. Aside from extremely widespread use, social networking provides frequency for advertisers. With so many companies rushing to advertise on these sites, it's no wonder they're so profitable. If you give people something they want free of charge and they take to it, there is tons of money to be made from the advertisers that take advantage of that.

And the site developers are giving advertisers more and more control. When Facebook first instituted a system whereby your friends could see your online purchases, there was an uproar from users. Facebook eventually allowed users to control this feature but in the end, it didn't affect usage. People hated the Mini Feed because it was creepy and allowed companies to advertise on their front pages. But the Minifeed is still there and I'm sure the site didn't lose very many users. After all, no one complains when they have "free gifts" to give their friends that are sponsored by Ford or a movie studio. Advertisers love this and the people on these sites love it so business is just going to keep booming.
