Assessing the Trend of Amateur Celebrity News Blogs

Bhumika Ghimire
Our obsession with celebrity news has grown over the years and now along with the media, blogs has started to take advantage of this trend. If you Google the term "celebrity new blog" will come up with thousands of results, all kind of blogs promising to disclose the every day detail in a celebrity's life to that latest divorce scandal.

Most of these blogs are amateur, meaning they are run by people like you and me, who are just regular folks with time in their hand, access to internet and desire to talk endlessly abut anything related to celebrities.

Unlike media outlets like People Magazine or US Magazine, amateur blogs do not operate under certain journalistic standard. Although the standard of legitimate celebrity magazines is much debated, nevertheless they do have a code of conduct. As for these blogs, they are pretty much fair game.So is it wrong to expect a level of decency and standard from them?

Well, I would say the name "amateur" says it all. Yes they cannot do illegal stuff but holding them to a journalistic standard is not possible.

Along with the trend of being "just off the keyboard", amateur blogs are known to be a little phony since most of the bloggers have never met the stars they write about. So when you read then talking in detail about the star's personal life, you have to wonder whether the story has an inch of truth in it.In short, amateur blogs have stories which for the most part and un-reliable and pure rumors.

So why do people flock to sites like PerezHilton or hundreds of other amateur celebrity news sites? In my observation, it is because unlike magazines, checking out a blog is totally free. People tend to think "whatever" and just enter the site. Also it is easy. That news is on your finger tips, so people don't think much about why and what.

I have visited PerezHilton once and found it too creepy. The guy who is the blogger for the site has not met most of the stars and yet he talks like an authority on them. So now I have stopped going after celebrity news blogs. I have CNN for all the "breaking news" and I am happy with that.
