Suicide is an individual choice and there is nothing more important then upholding one's freedom of choice. I'm not saying we should be allowed to go out and mass murder people with out consequence but if someone decides to end there own life it is there choice. If one's decision does not physically harm another then in most cases it should not matter if they make that choice. One's life is all they really have in the end and they should at least be in control of that.
Life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness those are three of our most treasured beliefs as a society. Though you may argue suicide goes against life I would argue that we are given these liberties and have the right to decline any of our rights that we so choose. If one decides that life is not important to them and they would sacrifice it to pursue happiness then that is an individual choice. If your life is miserable and you feel that there is no chance that it will get better then living will not make you very happy. In some cases a person knows they will only live for a short while and that they will die soon. When one suffers excruciating pain and an fulfilling life with the knowledge that they will soon die they should be given the right to choose to end it. The only conflict-ion this would have is with religious beliefs of what suicide may lead to after one's death. Our laws should not be based upon religion. There is supposedly a separation of church and state in our government though this issue may also be argued.
Assisted suicide is not murder and to see it as such is ignorant. Assisting someone means that they themselves are still ending there life you are merely showing them how to. If someone sets up a machine that will end ones life if they push a button they still have to push the button giving them the option to decide not to end there own life. Often people who try to kill themselves fail with out professional help and it leads to them simply trying over and over again putting themselves through more unneeded misery making it more humane to assist them to allow for a successful attempt.
Professional assistance in matters of suicide is one of the smartest things that we can allow as a society. If people are allowed to go to a doctor for help then a doctor can make sure they have a quick and painless end to there life. No more will people need to shoot themselves in the head or slit there wrists. This will create a little more ease on family members when dealing with the loss of a loved one. Would you rather walk into a room to see your loved one's brains scattered across the floor or know that they died peacefully with an injection given by a trained professional? I'm sure most of us would take the second option.
Reasons for suicides will be discovered and the want for self termination may be reduced if someone goes to a doctor because a person will have more time to think on there decision while getting a professionals opinion. Doctor's knowing the reason for a patient's desire to kill them self will allow them the opportunity to solve the issue which seems to be too much for said patient. Anti-depressants may be prescribed or medical treatment in other areas to cure whatever ails such patient. In the end it makes suicide less likely and a more humane process when it shall occur.
We as a society cannot end self termination but we can limit it while making those which occur safer and less devastating to families. To claim assisted suicide as murder and condemn it as wrong morally is to deny one the right to make a choice. To limit one's choice's on there own life is something we should do very sparsely. Whether you believe suicide is right or wrong it is still a choice that belongs to an individual and not the rest of the world so lets try to limit it's occurrence by offering knowledge instead of condemning it as wrong.
