AC Writers: Preview the Best Websites in the World, Save the Ones You Can't Live Without, and Have on Hand Right at Your Fingertips!
The first one is an award winning web-app called Symbaloo. "Symbaloo is an ancient Greek verb meaning 'gathering' 'assembling'" according to their website at www.symbaloo.com Based in the Netherlands, Symbaloo is hailed as Spin Magazine's 2008 website of the year, yet only a few have even heard of it. Basically, it is a personal online desktop where you can save up to 52 website locations to dynamic hot-buttons on one page. Each hot-button can then be personalized with a unique picture, logo, or predetermined colored-coded Search Modules for easy referencing. As mentioned above, when you complete one page, just make another one, and another, and so on to infinity. Because Symbaloo is based online, it is completely immune from computer crashes, disk-drive failures, viruses and the like-as the company completely maintains it's security and your peace of mind via password protection. If you keep a Symbaloo tab open in your browser, you can edit and reorganize your desktop anyway you want, on-the-fly, just by dragging an icon to the middle section and either Edit, Delete, or Rename your new hot-button.
Now for an important note: whether you use Internet Explorer or Mozilla Firefox, you can attach an Add to Symbaloo button to your browser interface using Symbaloo Bookmarker (search for it through your browser Add-Ons function) then, when you happen upon that special web-app or website that you just can't live without, click the Add to Symbaloo button, give it a name and wallah! you'll have it right there on your new Symbaloo desktop whenever you need it. The synergism evolving from Symbaloo and its accompanying Add Button, combined with the power of this next application, will literally revolutionize the way you search and store new website resources!
This final little bullet to complete your web-resource arsenal is from the website www.StumbleUpon.com Its simple in concept for even the novice web-surfer, yet sophisticated enough for the most advanced user, this little browser attachment will be your golden key to the gateway of the Internet. Use the Add-ons function (under Tools) for your browser and once installed, fill out your preferred search categories, (under Settings) for example; writing, (of course) computers, science, bizarre, games, etc, then press the SU button. A website will then pop-up based on your preferences and other users promotion of a particular site. There's a Thumbs-up button if you like it, and a Thumbs-down button if you don't. (By the way, this is a great way to promote your new article or website; by pressing the Thumbs-up from your particular page, you can input the search category, meta-tags, and any comments you want to make, and when launched, will randomly show up when Stumbled Upon by other users.)
For our purposes here, you'll want to use the Channels button (from the Stumble-Upon browser bar) to Stumble through the Writing category only (you can change it back to All category when finished.) This will take you to only the websites for that specific category. When you find something you like, click the Add to Symbaloo button (located top right of your browser) to save it to your desktop, and then keep Stumbling on to other writing discoveries as you like.
Finally, when you have completely filled a desktop, you can choose to make it public and share it with the world! You do this through your settings tab at the top. You can see an example of mine at the following link. You can even make it your own if you like it well enough! http://www.symbaloo.com/public/1441/writing-resources/
