Assorted Saltwater Fishing Baits and What They Will Catch

A Guide for Selecting Saltwater Fish Bait

Emma Salk
There are some things that most fish will eat: worms, bugs, other small fish. But, to have the best luck when it comes to fishing, choose the bait that the particular type of fish like the best, and you'll bring home a huge catch. This guide should help you decide what type of bait to select to catch the type of saltwater fish you're after.

Tear bread off into pieces, roll them tightly between the palms of your hands, and you'll have a dough ball that will help you catch bream, mullet, drummer, yellowtail and slimy mackerel. Flavor dough balls with fish oil, if you want, and you'll catch all of those plus garfish, tommy ruff and hardyhead. Use pieces of cheese to catch these same types of fish.

Bait your hook with pieces of meat, like steak, liver, chicken or kidney to catch bream, mulloway, yellowtail, slimey mackerel and even sharks. Pieces of fish flesh, cut into strips or cubes, can be used to catch bream, snapper, flathead, dart, cod, flounder, goatfish, redfish, coral trout, emperor, marine perch and shark. Crabmeat can be used to catch cod, drummer, snapper, grouper, bream, parrotfish, and marine perch.

Pieces of octopus or squid can be used on the hook to catch snapper, kingfish, goatfish, parrotfish, bream, coral trout, sweetlip, leatherjackets and boarfish. Live fish like mackerel or mullet can be used to catch snapper, tuna, trevally, mackerel, mahi-mahi, cobia, cod and shark. Mussels, abalone, clams and oysters can be used to catch whiting, dart, leatherjackets, bream, drummer, snapper and Australian Salmon.

Use prawns and shrimp to catch flathead, bream, whiting, cod, snapper, yellowtail, flounder, goatfish, emperor, marine perch, redfish, sweep and baramundi. Use marine worms to catch whiting, bream, flathead, luderick, mulloway, flounder, trevally, dart and Australian salmon.

Use whole fish, like dead pilchards or whitefish, to catch kingfish, mackerel, snapper, coral trout, boarfish, trout, emperors and mulloway.

Just because you use a particular kind of bait to catch a particular type of fish doesn't mean you'll automatically do so. Other factors, like weather, can determine whether you'll have a good haul for the day. But, when you set out to catch certain fish with certain bait you up your chances; fish love what they love and will go after that bait - so long as you put it in the water for them!
