Asus Eee Netbook Power Cord Solution

Temporary Fix for Eee PC 900HD Asus Netbook

Ranee Wright
After only one month of ownership, my AC adapter power cord for the Eee PC Asus netbook failed. The blue indicator light does not come on and obviously doesn't charge the Eee netbook. It does however, make strange squeaky mice noises.

Researching various technology forums revealed the Eee PC 900HD power cord problem to be a widespread problem. It also led me to try this strange SOLUTION: You are going to laugh and ponder why this works! Refrigerate overnight or freeze (for several hours) your Eee PC power cord AC adapter! You don't need to worry about the piece you plug into the wall. The AC adapter is the problem.

My theory is that the Eee Asus netbook power cord has a 'short' so please proceed with caution! I haven't had any adverse problems though. If you plug it in and light fails to come on, turn the plug around and try again. You may need to try a different outlet. For whatever reason, I get it to work in the bathroom but not the family room (where my woodstove is). I highly recommend plugging into outlet before inserting power cord into AC adapter. To clarify: plug AC adapter into PC, plug power cord into outlet and then connect the power cord into AC adapter.

This solution to your Eee netbook PC should only be used as a temporary fix. Contact Asus to request a replacement Asus eee netbook power cord. You will then need to call Technical Support department at either 812-282-2787 (Option 3) or 510-739-3777 (Option 3) and give Service "Case" Number. Click here for the Service Form. They do not pay return shipping. Processing is 2-3 days excluding shipping time. I had the Eee PC support rep laughing when I told her the Asus eee netbook power cord worked after refrigeration.
I was happy with the Eee Asus netbook PC 900HD price and product functionality until the power cord defect was discovered after such a short time of ownership. I purchased my Eee PC from Best Buy and didn't even bother seeking resolve with them. The support rep did not have a good answer for why the power cord failed so soon after purchase.

Hi Alex. My replacement cord was fine - it was the original that was faulty. Replacement is still working - haven't had to resort to freezing it. Hope that helps.

Hey,I have a replacement cord because my old one died of its wire and the way this one went out fits your description.I think it might be from the part that plugs into the wall because the light didn't come on,but since My house does not have another netbook in it,I cannot check to see.I wanted to know if it was possible that all repalcement cords do this or if it is just because it shorted out.If you could get back to me ASAP I would greatly appreciate it! Thanks!

Plugging everything in before reconnecting the power cord to the AC adapter worked for me. Fingers crossed that the fix will work for the weekend. Thanks!

Thanks for the info I discovered here regarding the possible fixes for this annoying problem. We have been fortunate in that this took over a year to crop up. Hopefully, it IS just the plugin to the PC and not the receiving port on the PC.

After spending WAAAy too long trying to hunt down a cheap fix for our Eee (and lamenting the fact that it's no longer 1969 and you can't go down to Canal St. or ANYwhere in NYC and get parts, or even find a salesdrone who gives a crap) I found the fix for $10 at RShack, after going to many and getting the sales pitch for a $100 universal PS. In my case I knew allI needed was to replace the tip but it looked like an impossible task without ordering from a parts site and waiting two weeks. Fortunately, the guys at the RS on 7th Ave in Park Slope pointed me to what I was asking for: an Enercell Adaptaplug, in my case a "C" tip (4.75 x 1.7) for $6 and an Adaptaplug Socket for $3. You snip off the Asus tip, strip back some wire and wrap the socket wires neatly. I might have soldered it but I wasn't in the mood, so I put a tiny dab of Super Glue with a toothpick at each end of where the two wires reached the furthest, leaving the center wrapped but untouched by gl

It is disappointing Nancy. Especially since they know it's a problem and do not even offer to pay shipping to return faulty cord. I do suggest sending in for a new one though.

I purchased my Asus EeePC netbook seven months ago and the power cord doesn't seem to get a good connection - I plug it in but have to push and hold it there - otherwise, it shows battery. I'm so disappointed. Not sure what to do.

It is unfortunate. esp. since they are now certainly aware of the problem. I would send it back. The replacement I got doesn't need refrigerated. Glad you got it working!
