At the Airport

Elena dal Friuli
The plane slowly approaches the gate
It is carrying someone to his date
A heart in anticipation beating
As he waits for his first meeting.

The concourse is never ending
While customs is demanding
And for him who missed the year
Hard it is to stop the tear.

Applause rises from around
Cheers of gratitude abound
It is the uniform they see
Of him who fights to keep them free.

He eagerly scans the cheering crowd
Looking for someone to whom he vowed
"I will be back please wait for me
You and the baby I want to see."

Eyes meet, tears flow
A sign says "welcome home Joe"
Two hearts in anticipation beating
As they share his first meeting.

For him who missed the year
Hard it is to stop the tear
As the baby in his arms he takes
She who slept now awakes.

The smiles and tears he can't control
This precious moment has filled a hole
The airport crowd in silence stands
As daddy and daughter now hold hands.
