At Home Data Entry Work Professionals: Increase Your Productivity

Jamie Brown
If you do at home data entry work, you know how difficult it can be sometimes to concentrated on the task at hand. You wake up, fired up, throw on the coffee, and then sit at your computer, raring to go....

Two hours later, you've barely even started! What's up with that?

I used to work at a data entry job, only it was inside of an office. Being constantly monitored by a manager in an office environment makes it a lot easier to be productive. You are only allowed to get up from your desk a few times for 5 minute breaks and lunch. In fact, I was one of the top performers in my unit. But when I started doing at home data entry work and other similar tasks from home, my productivity took a nose dive.

That's because there are just too many distractions in the home to deal with when you're doing an at home data entry job or similar work. The television, the sight of a beautiful sunny day through your window, no pressure from a boss, and kids running up and down the hallway if you have them. What's even more difficult is resisting the temptation to pull up a new browser window and start chatting with your friends or reading your favorite forum instead of typing in your data.

If I were to have kept up the type of productivity that I had at my former office job, I'd probably be making double or triple what I made per hour at that job doing at home data entry work. Slowly but surely I started to learn a few tricks, tips, and motivational techniques that help to keep your focused while doing this work:

1) Listen to music instead of television. If you are the type that needs to have some type of distraction while doing your at home data entry work, put on headphones and listen to your favorite tunes instead of the tube. If you have to have the TV on, put it on mute.

2) Go to the coffee shop once in a while to work. The change of atmosphere, combined with bold coffee helps to get you buzzing and in the mood for working. Go two or three times a week.

3) Use a timer. There are a variety of time management programs available online that will help you to stay focused on work, then play, then work, and so on so that you get more done. Check out the Pomodoro Technique for instance.

4) Set up a comfortable at home work area. You have to get in the "mood" for working when you're doing at home data entry work. It helps to have an established work area. Buy an ergonomic mouse or joystick and keyboard to make clicking or typing in your data more comfortable, as well as a full office or lounge chair that supports your back. Get a monitor screen protector to shield your eyes since you'll be staring at the computer monitor for long periods of time.

It's a challenge to stay focused when you're doing at home data entry work, but with a little dedication, initiative and a few tools you should be able to increase your productivity significantly.
