At Least 150,000 Killed by Haiti Earthquake - Ways to Help

A. Collins
The Haitian government reports at least 150,000 killed by the mid-January earthquake. More than 430 Red Cross workers are in the country, which is the biggest Red Cross deployment to one country in history. Save the Children and Americares have organized to treat more than 85,000 Haitians; already they've distributed almost 17 tons of medical supplies. Save the Children is currently helping children who have been separated from their parents.

Oxfam has over thirty years experience in Haiti, and they are currently providing drinking water, sanitation, and temporary shelter to earthquake victims. According to Oxfam shelter expert Rick Bauer, "The goal is to get people back into safe homes as soon as possible."

Local Girl Scout and Boy Scout teams helped CARE distribute aid. "It was inspiring to see," said CARE senior vice president Patrick Solomon. CARE has provided clean drinking water to at least 14,000 people.

Direct Relief International has been in Haiti since 1964. 100% of funds donated go to Haiti-related activities.
