At US Open, Golfers Verbally Attacked

Tiger Woods and Sergio Garcia, Michelson Among Victims of Drunken Fans

Far removed from the game of golf are rowdy fans who drink too much and who accept no accountability for their raucous behavior. One does not expect vulgar, inebriated and amateurish businessmen at a golf championship and in no manner express themselves with conduct as was seen in New York.

As the world's best golfers approached the 10th Hole at Long Island, New York's "Bethpage Black," an undesirable group of drunks who camped nearby the beer wagon began their jeers and potty-mouthed name-calling. They showed no respect for the talent before them or for the game of golf. The jeering continued along the course, and this group of despicable goof balls even heckled Phil Michelson, referring to the cost of his wife's bout with cancer.

When is it acceptable to change a letter or two in someone's name to make the name obscene? When is it acceptable to yell at golfers as they approach their tee shots? If officials do not end this now, we will have lost another sport to the "bad side". Our family members stopped attending pro football games because of the drinking, gambling, fighting and vomiting. Who wants to pay for that?

Late Saturday afternoon at the US Open, the golf officials began ending beer sells 15 minutes early. According to Steve Dash Vice President of Operations at Yellow cab, his fleet service responded to the request and dispatched 90 taxicabs to the venue, only to find limited parking or no parking. The patrons began arguing and perhaps some fighting broke out over who would get the cabs.

The 2009 US Open began with rain delays and postponed golf. The fans were drenched; umbrellas everywhere and the greens looked like duck ponds. The ground crew was amazing. We watched via television as they removed the water and prepared the course for play.

Amidst all the rain, delays, rowdy crouds, name -calling and drenched golfers, Lucas Glover from Greenville, South Carolina won the 2009 US Open. Michelson almost pulled off a great comback but finished second with , Barnes and Duval. Tiger ended the day at even par.

  • Rain delays leads to Monday finish, June 22, 2009
  • Unruly fans, heckling, jeering and lots of *#%&%* bleeps.
  • One winner, three tied for second and where did Tiger finish?
Who me?-No, not me! I played but after throwing clubs in ponds and digging tunnels in traps, I retired-blood pressure down and no stress. It's Bingo or Checkers with the grandchildren. But look at the Pros, closely at the eyes.
I see stress.

wow, just wow. I mean, to stoop as low as to refer to Mickleson's wife's bout with cancer is pretty low-even outside of the great atmosphere golf is.

You're right. This type of behavior isn't what you'd expect from a sport like golf. I hope these people are ashamed of themselves.
