"At the World Turns" Cancelled by CBS

"As the World Turns" (often referred to as ATWT) is being canceled by CBS. CBS announced on Tuesday it was canceling one of its longest-running daytime television soap operas, "As the World Turns". The afternoon soap opera, the last remaining daytime drama made by Procter & Gamble subsidiary TeleNext Media will air its final episode in September 2010. The term "soap opera" was coined by TeleNext Media, which was set up in 1933 to produce programming to promote Procter & Gamble soap and laundry detergents.

As the World Turns was the first television day time drama with a 30-minute running time; all daytime dramas until then had had 15-minute running times. At first, viewers did not respond to the new half-hour serial, but ratings picked up in its second year, eventually, in the fall of 1958, reaching the top spot in the daytime Neilsen Ratings. In 1959, the show started a run of weekly ratings wins that would not be interrupted for over twelve years. In the year-to-date ratings, As the World Turns was the most-watched daytime drama from 1958 until 1978, with ten million viewers tuning in each day. As the World Turns has won the Daytime Emmy for Outstanding Daytime Drama Series in 1987, 1991, 2001, and 2003.

The daytime drama is notable for having been taped in New York City for all of its time on television, its first 43 years in Manhattan and since 1999 in Brooklyn . The show was made in color on Monday, August 21, 1967, and expanded from a half-hour in length to one hour starting on December 1, 1975.

The end of "As The World Turns" follows the cancellation by CBS earlier this year of "Guiding Light" after a 72-year run -- the world's longest running radio and TV soap opera. "As the World Turns" is the second longest running soap opera, it first aired on April 2, 1956. The story line is centered in a mid-western town named Oakdale, the original core family is the Hughes family and they are still one of the main families on the show today. The personal and professional lives of doctors and lawyers would remain central focus. It will be interesting to see what characters are brought back to Oakdale and how the long running show will end.

Why would CBS take ATWT off the air? Have watched for over 40 years. Even when I worked I taped it, still do. You are leaving the Bold & Beautiful on - why?? no story line except Ridge and Brooke in bed. ATWT is a great written show with many different plots.
As of Sept. 2010, I will only watch Y&R and will stop watching any thing else on CBS - going to try General Hospital on ABC at the same time slot. You are looking for people to respond to advertising and buy their products - sorry for you - not happening - bad move on your part...
