Athenos Baked Pita Chips Roasted Garlic and Herb, Review

Katri Marson

Recently my mom brought over a bag of Athenos Baked Pita Chips, Roasted Garlic and Herb flavor. She said that her and my dad really liked them and thought I might like to try them. I couldn't say no to Pita Chips, cause in my experience pita chips are always good and add garlic to the mix and you can't go wrong.

After she gave me the bag I glanced at the ingredients to make sure I could eat them before I dove into them. I have some dietary restrictions. In the ingredients list I found Natural Flavors, which could be anything. I am all for companies having special flavor secrets but it sure makes those with dietary restrictions life a little harder. I set the bag aside until a weekday when I could contact the phone number listed on the bag.

First thing Monday morning my pita chip craving was calling me so I picked up the phone to call Athenos for the info I needed. Turns out Athenos is owned by Kraft and that was who I got when I called the number on the bag. In the end the customer service lady on the other end didn't know more than I did about the flavoring. I figured I would email them, but Kraft does not want you to email them because I could not find an address on their site, just FAQ which didn't help me at all. I had pretty much given up and planned to just give the bag back to my parents when I tried the last resort of Twitter. I sent out a tweet to Kraft and it took a little bit but Kraft did get back to me and said they did a lot of digging and their supplier confirmed the natural flavors are all plant derived. Kudos to Kraft!

Since that was finally settled I did not hesitate to finally grab the bag and dig in. I was surprised that the pita chip pieces are actually a bit smaller than I figured and a lot or most were broken. The taste matters more to me, but it would have been nice if the majority of them were not broken into small pieces.

The garlic and herb flavor is not very strong, but it is still noticeable. It doesn't have that super strong salty flavor taste either, which to me is good. The sodium isn't too bad as "chips" go at 290 mg. The flavor isn't evenly distributed throughout the bag as some chips have more flavors than others. A bit disappointing but not too bad.

Each pita chip is nice and light and crispy. They are medium thin and not too thick. They say they are 50% less fat. And I can kind of tell. That is not a bad thing just the other pita chips I have tried taste like they have more fat in them. And you know fat makes things taste better. Although, for having 50% less fat these are pretty good. They have 120 calories per serving and 4 grams of fat.

If you are looking for a better alternative to potato chips or a lower fat alternative to normal pita chips and you love garlic give Athenos Baked Pita Chips Roasted Garlic and Herb a try.
