Athens, Ohio Church Supports Haiti Mission Outreach

First Christian Church Membership Sends Supplies and Prayers to Haitian Earthquake Victims

First Christian Church may be small, but the good works of the congregation reach well beyond the walls of the modest building in Athens, Ohio.

Members of the church at W. State and N. Congress gathered on Sunday for a service that was dedicated to sharing God's love with those less fortunate. Interim Pastor Jeff Bartlett spoke of the devastation in Haiti after recent earthquakes left much of the Caribbean country in ruins, and provided an opportunity for those gathered to reach a hand across the miles.

Pastor Bartlett had been in contact with Church World Service to inquire as to how the church could help the recent victims of disaster in Haiti and later met with coordinators at First Christian Church to set things in motion. Karin Bright, coordinator of Spiritual Life, solicited donations of supplies and funds to purchase items for hygiene packets.

Karin and Missions coordinator Jolynne Hudnell set up a special service in the church basement to allow attendees to assemble the toiletries into small packages to be distributed by Church World Service to those in need.

Jolynne mentioned that with so much local need, she generally preferred outreach projects within her community. "However, the Haiti earthquake and its devastation caused need on a much larger scale. With so many in Haiti needing help, we wanted to do what little we could. I believe that our efforts combined with others around the world can make a big difference."

Reading from Luke Chapter 6, Pastor Bartlett shared how Jesus was chastised by the Pharisees for working on the Sabbath, and likened the works of his congregation to the works of Jesus on that day, pointing out that ministering to the needs of others is not work in the true sense, but God's work.

It was a privilege to participate in the service on Sunday and witness the compassion of young and old alike that assembled the meager items into bags suitable for shipment, while offering prayer for those affected by the tragic earthquake. The packages contained simple items that most of us take for granted, yet can mean so much to those who have lost everything.

A monetary offering was collected to help offset shipping and administrative costs incurred by Church World Service, and toothbrushes, soap and washcloths were tucked into 50 packets for further transport to Haiti, along with the prayers of a small town church in Athens, Ohio.

Good stuff. Everybody should be involved, but I just hope everybody does it wisely, so as to avoid mistakes and corruption. Those people imprisoned now for doing things in an unwise way also need prayers, and I'd rather trust established organizations than the government or newcomers.

Wonderful article. Hygiene items are so necessary, and mostly unavailable in disaster areas.
