The technique of microdermabrasion as the term implies involves the use of micro-particles to scrape or to exfoliate the skin. This procedure is normally used to effect cosmetic changes to the skin where the skin has uneven tones usually through skin infections, like acne or lines and wrinkles from aging and so on.
The procedure does not provide a permanent solution as skin grows back. It must be repeated at intervals of between 3 and 6 weeks.
There are generally two types of microdermabrasion in common use. The first utilizes a brush spinning at high speed that scrapes off thin layers of the skin to produce the desired effect. The second method uses aluminum oxide particles. These very small particles are blown at high speed against the skin making a similar action as with the brush. However, due to the size of the particles, the abrasive action is a lot finer and can be controlled more accurately.
The second method is the one used most effectively. However, the cost of the machinery used and the skill level required to operate the machines means that only trained and licensed specialists can employ them.
Dueto the cost of the procedure by professionals, enterprising companies have come up with alternative methods of microdermabrasion which can be done at home without the need to employ the expensive dermatologist.
These products can be very effective if properly prepared and are very easy and safe to use, even for the untrained. This then allows an individual to purchase a product and simply take it home and perform a similar procedure to the one requiring the services of a dermatologist at a much reduced cost.
As with any other product, there are not only numerous competing offerings now on the market but there are now many which are ineffective or totally useless. To make matters worse, a lot of people who try the products either do not follow the instructions provided, use a product that is inappropriate for their condition or are unlucky enough to pick one of the many less effective or useless products that are also on sale. The end-result is usually a job done very badly or not at all.
This apparent ineffectiveness of the home based product has given a general impression that these products do not actually work. While some products do not work at all, there are some quality products which can be used quite effectively to get a positive result.
Most of these products, even those that do contain aluminum oxide, are not as effective as one would expect due to the presentation of the product.
The carrier of the active ingredient, the abrasive, is a cream. This reduces the abrasion by providing a lubricating effect. The end-result is a very ineffective removal of the problematic skin layers. Some change will be noted, but not enough to fully address the need.
There are a very few products that are very effective. These provide the aluminum oxide without the cream base. They are provided with the appropriate means of applying the oxide onto the skin for an effective home dermabrasion operation.
So if you are looking to buy one, look for products that have this feauture.
