The Atkins diet outlines a method for a healthier, more balanced way of eating, than what most Americans consider a normal diet. The base of the Atkins diet is to consume good carbohydrates, balanced with healthy proteins.
Most Americans consume more meat, accompanied with starchy vegetables, and unhealthy fats. The American diet is also full of processed foods with hidden sugars and highly processed carbohydrates. This is likely the reason that many Americans are either pre-diabetic, or already suffer from diabetes, a preventable condition.
The glycemic index is a scientific method of measuring the effects of carbohydrates on our blood sugar levels. The refined carbohydrates and sugars in most processed foods rank very high on the glycemic index. High glycemic foods burn quickly, the pancreas then releases a rush of insulin to break down the sugars and carbohydrates.
Some examples of high glycemic index foods are: white bread, pasta, white rice, low-fiber cereals, potatoes, and watermelon. Keep in mind that most refined, pre-prepared, or ready-to-eat meals, are generally high on the glycemic index.
Foods that are lower on the glycemic index burn much slower, therefore more beneficial to our health, and are the best foods for diabetics. Some examples are: Non-starchy vegetables, most fruits, whole grain cereal, whole grain breads, legumes, milk and yogurt.
Usually as children, our bodies function more efficiently, because children are more active than adults. As we age, however, these symptoms become more prevalent. The nation-wide obesity epidemic is largely a result of our high-carbohydrate diets, and lower levels of activity.
Your family doctor can easily identify the early warning signs of becoming diabetic. If you have pre-diabetic conditions, remaining on a high-carbohydrate diet could easily cause your body to become fully diabetic.
Studies show that a good low-carbohydrates diet like the Atkins plan is one of the most effect methods for controlling your blood sugar. When the Atkins diet is followed closely your blood sugar will be stabilized throughout the day.
The Atkins diet focuses on consuming a balance of proteins, fats and good carbohydrates that will keep your body satisfied without the insulin spikes. Extra virgin olive oil, virgin coconut oil, and other healthy fats are emphasized. The proper use of dietary fats and oils is important to brain function and mood management.
As always check with your doctor before starting any diet plan. Your doctor may recommend consulting with a dietitian for a complete list of foods, and preparation methods to achieve the lowest glycemic index plan that is best for you.
