Atlanta Flood of 2009 "Worst in Recorded History!" Douglasville. Ga. Claims It's Latest 6 Dead Victim
This "horrific and deadly" un-expected rainfall continued for (8) eight hours until 8:00 a.m. into the next morning on Sept. 21, 2009 all over the entire city of Douglasville-Hiram-Carrol-Austell and also the entire Metro-Atlanta area, which finally began to diminish with a few scattered showers throughout the day. Unfortunately, by then the flooding damage was severely done to the entire city of Atlanta, leaving certain parts of this beautiful world-wide U.S.A. city under (10) ten feet of water or more, that is normally completely dry, especially the city of Douglasville, Ga..
The local Douglas County Sentinel newspaper on Sept. 29, 2009 reported the latest (6) sixth death Douglasville victim of this historic Atlanta flooding as believed to be a missing neighborly Carrol County woman in her SUV vehicle reported missing during the A.M. hours of flooding on Sept. 21, 2009. Was finally recovered somewhere around 3:30 p.m. this past Monday afternoon as of Sept. 28, 2009 on the banks of the Dog River reservoir in Douglasville, Ga.. by rescue workers.
Douglas County coroner Randy Daniel (ironically, my wife's cousin) was quoted and stating to local news sources as: "A county search team found the remains which have been sent to the State Crime Lab in Atlanta for positive identification. He said officials are not releasing a name until the identification is confirmed. The wrecked vehicle of the missing Carrol County woman was found last week in Mobley Creek off State Highway 5 in Douglas County after major flooding in the area".
In Austell Metro-Atlanta Ga. local news., also close to Douglasville, Ga., a used car dealership was completely flooded and destroyed with nearly 10 feet of water. Because of a nearby creek which runs off the Chattahoochee river and Austell Ga.'s Sweetwater Creek, causing approx. 20-30 vehicles to be completely flooded with mud and slim as a result of flooding which looks like the bottom of a lake after it has receded to it's lowest level.
Local weather experts, including the Weather Channel located here in Atlanta Ga., stated this was the "worst rain-storm in recorded history" for Atlanta-Douglas county residents. Some meteorology, climatologist and geologist scientist have also stated this was probably the most intense rainfall that Metro-Atlanta residents had received in over the past 300 years or more, because it was so fast and wide-spread in this 70 mile area of town creating "sudden and un-expected flooding".
Weather forecasters here in Atlanta, Ga. simply state? "What's so ironic about this particular historic flooding rain-storm in this mid-September of 2009. Is the fact that "This storm had NO NAME?" unlike the previous predictable storms of "IKE and Hugo" which brought about a certain amount of EXPECTED rainfall creating flooding for Atlanta residents.
Local Metro-Atlanta residents stated they were prepared for these storms and flooding, "but nothing like this!" Apparently, weather experts like Ken Cook of the local news, stated what actually happened was the fact it had rained continuously for the past week here in later part of September 2009, sometimes severe and sometimes mild, treating the soil with continuous water, "sort of like a sponge?"
Unfortunately for Atlanta residents, whenever this FINAL stream of this (1) one week's continuous rain (compared to a "tropical storm effect" with 50 mph winds and a hammering 2-3 inches of water per hour), hit Metro-Atlanta late Sunday night, the earthly ground soil could NOT stand anymore water and or rainfall. Thus, causing the water to over-flow or flood, similar to a cup of water over flowing or a "sponge that can NOT absorb anymore water".
Some local Atlanta weather forecasters also state, "The good news is? The Atlanta drought is finally over!" Because, for the past 3 or 4 years Metro-Atlanta has suffered a loss of rain. Oddly enough? Recreational Lake Lanier, located on the Northeast side of Atlanta, Ga. approx. 50 miles away from downtown Atlanta, has reached it's peak and NORMAL level because of this historic rainfall/flooding in this later part of September 2009.
Last summer of 2008, many Lake Lanier business' went under because of the severe drought that had taken place for so many years. This loving/family recreational skiing and fishing community Metro-Atlanta lake had reached a level of (18) eighteen feet below it's normal level, leaving the lake's business owners with nothing to care about after so many years of drought, because business was so bad. However, because of this tremendous September 2009 flood rainfall, this lake has luckily returned to normal.
The Bad news is? The Sweetwater Creek located in Austell Metro-Atlanta Ga. has over-flooded within a 3 mile radius during this "tropical rain effect", causing local bussiness' and home owners problems of over (8) eight feet of water or more in certain areas. I-20 interstate has also been closed recently in this area because flooding in this district as a result of this small Sweetwater creek that normally has a level of 3-4 feet of water or less on a normal basis.
