AT&T iPhone vs. Verizon iPhone

Brian C. Hopkins
I like millions of Americans am an iPhone addict. I was also like millions of Americans who were salivating over the opportunity to buy a Verizon iPhone. I have always considered myself a shrewd shopper. In fact when the entire world was mobbing each other to get to the nearest AT&T store to get the iPhone 4, I waited and read all the reviews to make sure that I wasn't going to get a bug filled test by Apple. The other thing I did was keep my existing AT&T service before. I didn't want to jump out of the frying pan and into the fire, so I was very cautious and wanted to make sure that I get the most bang for my buck. So here is my comparison.

Price

I currently carry the iPhone 3G with AT&T and I paid $199 with an upgrade and two year contract for that one. With Verizon, I paid $199 with a 2 year agreement as one year was not available. When you look at the plans, AT&T certainly has the edge hear. My plans are exactly the same I am paying about $20 a month more for my Verizon phone. Verizon has never been known for having good prices.

Coverage

This has been my big problem with AT&T. There are certain stores, hospitals and office buildings that I will have little to no signal with AT&T. As expected, the Verizon phone can connect in all of my dead signal areas for AT&T. The call clarity is picture perfect and unlike AT&T, I haven't had a single dropped call. I have been through local tunnels and maintained a great signal with Verizon where it is hit and miss with my AT&T phone. I can definitely hear them now.

Performance

This is where Verizon dropped the ball. The phone has similar functions as they're both Apple products, but that is where it stopped. I have found that downloading apps on my old 3G is far faster on my AT&T phone unlike what I have heard some reviews say. I have also found the same problem that every other user of the Verizon service has had a problem with. People who buy an iPhone buy it so they can use all the smart phone features while actually talking on the phone. You can't do this with Verizon.

Conclusion

Verizon gives superior call coverage and clarity, but it certainly comes at a price (literally), but the loss of surf and talk functionality is huge for someone like me that uses his phone to get on the web while talking. Each buyer will have to make up their own mind and take each of the own mind, but if asking for my opinion I would say wait until Verizon can improve in performance and price.
