AT&T Offers $10 DSL Plan, and Keeps it a Secret

clarissa
Techmonstersandcritcs.com reports that AT&T has launched a new DSL plan that only costs $10. Such a competitive price is very interesting, but even more so is the fact that AT&T is telling no one about the inexpensive internet service.

As AT&T launched the service, it made no announcements or evident attempts at marketing. When going on the website, the $10 DSL service is hidden. There are many theories surrounding the reasons why AT&T might have chosen to be so low key about the service. The reason that is being pointed out most heavily is that the company was forced to create the service. However, they were not forced to market it.

The DSL plan was launched on Saturday, and the plan was AT&T's own creation. The company had certain obligations to the FCC in order to obtain an $86 billion buyout. This buyout was approved when AT&T wanted to acquire the Bell South company in 2006. The $10 plan is for customers in AT&T's area of service. This area includes a combination of Bell South customers and customers in twenty-two other states.

The plan that is heavily advertised on the AT&T website is a $19.95 per month plan, reports ajc.com. This offer only shaves $5.00 off of the normal price that is $24.95 per month. Both the $10.00 plan and the $19.95 plan give customers the same speed of service, which is 768 kilobits per second.

In order to get the $10.00 service, customers need to sign a one-year contract and have local phone service. Ajc.com quoted AT&T spokesperson Bill Marks. He said that the company is placing more emphasis on the $$19.95 plan because it has the "widest appeal to customers." He also said that the difference between the two plans besides the price is that the $10.00 option requires a one-year contract while the $19.95 service does not reported ajc.com. Techmonstersandcritcs.com reported that the AT&T spokesperson did not mention why the $$10.00 DSL plan was not announced.

Some people think that AT&T cannot be trusted and the current even just gives more evidence for such a conclusion. However, if customers would like to still give the $10.00 service a go, they should go to the website and look at the Terms of Contract page. That is where customers will find the hidden $10.00 plan reports Techmonstersandcritcs.com. Later, AT&T will be introducing a "naked" DSL, which will not require phone service. It will run at about $19.95 per month.

What makes this even worse is that the phone service you have to buy is about $25.oo more that their competition such as Talk America. So what are you really saving?

Interesting, but not overly surprising. Many companies have hidden "lowball plans" like these, and they often resort to them as "customer saviors" when a customer is ready to ditch their product--they are offered an "offer they can't refuse" with the lowest price possible and we think we pulled the wool over their eyes.

AT&T is not a very customer friendly company! Thanks for the article!

Isn't that something? Thanks for reporting this!

Thanks for uncovering this for the average consumer. I never have liked AT&T so I probably won't pay them the $10 anyway. What you uncovered is another reason why AT&T is not out to please their customers. Great reporting.
