Attention Owners or Those Thinking About Purchasing a 2004 Honda Odysey

Rae Lynne Morvay
We found out the hard way that our 2004 Honda Odysey had a recall back in 2004. On our way back from our recent vacation our transmission literally dropped out of our car as we were driving, thank goodness we were not on the highway when this happened. According Motortrend.com
"ON SOME MINI VANS, SPORT UTILITY AND PASSENGER VEHICLES, CERTAIN OPERATING CONDITIONS CAN RESULT IN HEAT BUILD-UP BETWEEN THE COUNTERSHAFT AND SECONDARY SHAFT SECOND GEARS IN THE AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION, EVENTUALLY LEADING TO GEAR TOOTH CHIPPING OR GEAR BREAKAGE"

This can cause the gears to lock up and the transmission to lock up which could result in a crash.

There was also another recall in 2004 regarding the feul pump. Both of these are potentially very dangerous mechanical issues.

How We Found Out the Hardway

While my family was driving home from vacation our transmission just dropped out of our car. I think a guardian angle must have been watching over us because we had been on 75 mile an hour highways during most of the driving we were doing that day. When the transmission dropped causing our two front tires to pop and my husband to lose control of the car we were in a construction zone on fresh tar. That probably saved our lives as we only slid about car length. Had it dropped while we were on one of those highways doing 75 miles per hour I am afraid we would not be alive right now.

I don't believe car manufacturers do enough to let customers know about recalls. The notices they send come in small thin flimsy envelopes which make them very easy to get caught up in things like sales ads or not being distinguishable from junk mail therefore the car owners may never see them. They really need to follow up with customers with a phone call or a by requiring a signature when having them delivered so that car owners are sure to see them and realize that something important has been delivered. In my case the faulty equipment could have been fatal and yet I never recieved or was aware of this recall.

So I wanted to make everyone who owns a 2004 Odysey or who is planning on buying one to be aware of this recall and to get it fixed right away if you have not already. Be sure to go to the link above for motor trend for more information.

All car owners should go to motor trend and type in their vehicle to see if there have been any recalls on their cars that they may not have known about. Knowing about automobile recalls could save your life.

Wow, Rae, thanks for writing about this and perhaps, saving some lives. I agree - recalls should be sent out in personalized letters so that folks don't trash them (or the postal services don't destruct them!) and there should be follow-up phonecalls made to consumers. Cheers :)

Wow, thank goodness you and your family are okay. You're right, that could have been a tragedy.
