Attention Sarah Palin: Jesus was a Community Organizer. Pontius Pilate was a Governor

Religion and Politics

Louisa Burgess
I get a ton of emails as I'm sure you do. Junk, spam, jokes, prayers, more spam, quick notes from family and friends. The other day I received a photo and a link in the mail from a relative who is well aware of my politics. The photo is of a t-shirt emblazoned with: Attention Sarah Palin, Jesus was a community organizer. Pontius Pilate was a governor. The link: http://www.cafepress.com/palinvsjesus. Check it out. If you are a liberal or just a person with an edgy sense of humor you might, and I stress might, get a kick out of it. I know I did.

The odd thing is, several folks I sent it to didn't think it was amusing at all. Mostly they were conservative types, but not all. Some just thought that mixing religion with politics wasn't a good idea. Others thought well heck, could she really think that Obama is like Jesus? Of course not! My mother didn't raise a fool. However, I do think that many if not all community organizers are well meaning people trying to do some good in a cold cruel world. That's Christ-like in a way isn't it? And well, governors are politicians and any cynic knows that politicians are more like Pontius Pilate.

Governor Sarah Palin made a large size no-no when she poked fun of community organizers. If she hadn't already lost the Hillary supporters McCain was hoping to get with her far right stand on abortion, sex education and her overall conservative ideology, she managed to do it with that line about community organizers versus mayors. Surely she knows that any self-respecting small town mayor needs some community organizers on staff or on his or her side. And the responsibilities of a mayor that she spoke so eloquently about might ring true if she hadn't had to hire a city administrator to help her run her little city of 5-9,000 people.

What strikes me odd about the t-shirt and the opinion of my more conservative friends is that they don't get it and yet they proclaim themselves Christians. Let me make myself clear. I love them anyway. Yes, I surely do but what do they think Jesus was doing in all those bible stories they read? He was community organizing. He may have been the first and ultimate community organizer. Charity? He invented it according to the New Testament. Helping the disadvantaged and poor? Helping his friends less fortunate? You really don't have to scratch the surface much beyond the Marriage of Cana. Loaves and fishes anyone? Some more wine? No problem. Jesus is here.

I'm not prone to sacrilegious rambling but really can all the Palin lovers just get a grip on themselves and calm down please? She's going to be criticized, picked apart and laid out to dry just like any other candidate for higher office. Her qualifications are questionable. She asked for $200 million in earmarks and she flip flopped on the road to no where. This is the big show and if she's ready she can take it. Mud slinging is part of the game and politics isn't a noble profession. You choose it, you're going to get bloodied eventually. No matter what you may think of Sarah's politics, she's a big girl, er woman. To her chivalrous defenders: Governor Palin had five children, I'm sure a little poking fun of her own stupid remark won't kill her.

That shirt expresses just how I felt when I heard her mocking Obama about his former job. Nice work.

Loved this. I thought Republicans were somehow connected to the Religious ladder especially when they are president and act like they are God. Great job and funny article.

That's very true cahotek. In my case elected office never interested me. So instead I followed an elected official up the ladder until the work load quite honestly got to be too much for me, the 24/7 schedule etc. Plus I was ready to retire. I did all that while raising 2 boys and honestly it took a toll on family life that I regret. I hope Sarah Palin doesn't live to regret a few things. It's not easy being everything to everybody.
