Places to Visit Among the Amish in Pennsylvania

If you have never been to Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, then you are in for a treat. This lovely little slice of America, home to one of the largest communities of Amish in the country, is full of fun, exciting, and interesting things to do and places to visit. In this article, the first of a series, you will learn about some of the great attractions to be found in Pennsylvania's Amish Country.

Amish Farm and House
If you want to learn more about the Amish way of life, then you will definitely want to visit this attraction, located in the heart of Pennsylvania Amish Country. While there, you can tour the house, built in 1805, and learn about the traditions and way of life that makes the Old Order Amish so unique. When you're finished with the tour of the house, you can then walk through the grounds, where you can see a variety of animals, tour some of the other historic buildings on the property, and even watch demonstrations.

Amish Village
If you want to get the feel for what an entire Amish village feels and looks like, then be sure to visit the Amish Village, located in Strasburg, Pennsylvania. While you're there, you'll be able to see many of the authentic buildings that capture the way of life of the Amish people. Buildings that you can visit include the Schoolhouse, Blacksmith Shop, and Smokehouse, each of which has its own particular function. In addition, you can see some of the wonderful livestock that make this place home, including goats, horses, and pigs.

Lancaster Quilt and Textile Museum
Although the Amish are well-known for many things, one craft at which they are particularly skilled is in the production of dazzling quilts. If you pay a visit to the Lancaster Quilt and Textile Museum, you will be able to see some of the finest of these quilts, many produced during the 19th and 20th Centuries. If you see visiting during the Christmas season, you will get to see some of the delightful holiday displays as well.

Whether you plan on visiting Pennsylvania's Amish Country for a day or for an entire vacation, you will certainly find something for everyone in the family to enjoy. This is certainly one of the most interesting places to visit in the state, so be sure to save plenty of time so that you can visit and enjoy all of the many attractions this region has to offer.
