People that are considered to be innovative usually follow their own rules and guidelines. They don't follow current trends or stick to old customs. If they did that, they wouldn't be innovators at all; they would only be a part of the bunch. This isn't always easy, because you have to step outside your comfort zone and sometimes withstand other people's opinions and ridicule attempts, and many times your reputation suffers from this.
First of all, you need to be creative; creativity is the basis of innovation. Don't be afraid to be radical here. You need to think outside the box and find new approaches to old ideas. Feel free to look back to the past and present for inspiration, but never use these repeated ideas; be different.
You also need to be strong and brave. Since you are working with new ideas and things that have never been mentioned or seen before, people will see you as different, and they'll perceive you as either a lunatic or a genius.
You will be constantly challenged, and if you are not strong enough to push forward and to develop your ideas, they will slowly fade until they die. Never allow this! You need to never apologize and continue until the end. Think about Edison; he failed about 10000 times before creating the light bulb, but at the end he had the last word.
Concentrate your efforts in your vision and don't strand away from it. To truly be innovative and see your ideas turned into a reality it is imperative that you stay focused and go through the entire process until the end. Just by discussing your ideas to your friends a couple of times a week and thinking about it for 5 minutes per day you won't turn those ideas into a reality. You have to act and work on it n a regular basis. Develop plans and then take action to achieve your goals. You will need to work hard for this; there's no way around.
Being innovative is no easy task. We are constantly bombarded with distractions and a conditioning in which being different is not always a good thing. Many of us are also educated into being submissive and to follow whatever everyone else is doing without questioning or expressing our own ideas or individuality, but no matter how challenging being original is, it is a very rewarding path.
