The VW Golf GTi may be known as the hothatch king, I'd like to think otherwise. Comparing a Golf GTi with Audi A3 is a bit of a no brainer. Although the A3 shares a similar platform with the GTi, it's an Audi; and that makes all the difference in the world. Look out for GTi owners when the A3 hits the US streets because they'll be committing suicide!
Right now, if you own a GTi, you're cool. Once the A3 hit the US shores, you'll look a bit cheap. Also, you'll need to strap on some exterior decorations to keep up with the A3 looks! The A3 model will be yours for around $25,000 and will be geared for young customers and first-time buyers. And when the A3 does make it to the US, around 2011, the GTi owners will all commit suicide; or sell the GTi, and get an A3. The A3, will be powered by a 2.0T, and a 3.2 V6. No word on whether there will be a diesel range coming tot he US, yet.
But wait, more news from Audi: expect an RS version of the A3 to hit the US shores about a year after! And when that happens all BMW owners that don't have an M3, M5, or an M6 will commit suicide! Because the RS3 will be powered by a 2.5L Turbocharged 5 cylinder engine bringing you around 340 horsepower and 332 lb-ft of torque! That'll give you 0-60 in around 4.6 seconds, and a top speed of around 150 mph marker!
Drawbacks? Well, whenever you go up-market, you'll see a few of these. First one - the price. Audi brought the A3 to the States to attract first-time buyers and younger audience. The RS3, however, will be targeting the group of speed freaks who have a bit more money to spend. I'm guessing maybe around $45,000! That's a lot of money for a hatchback! But, what does it offer for the money? Well, you get the enjoyment of completely destroying most of BMW's base 1, and 3 series, and possibly even 5 series.
So, finally, we see the A3 on the horizon. And it comes at us with a twist! I personally love the A3, and well, you can guess what I think about the RS3 - it's absolutely fantastic!
