When I think of the August birthstone, Peridot, shimmering translucence comes to mind. These gemstones are beautiful, yellowish green to green in color. Peridot color varies according to the amount of iron found in the gemstone. Legend has it that Peridot gemstone was the favorite of Cleopatra.

Care of Peridot Gemstones

Even though Peridot is formed from hot temperatures such as volcanic eruptions, you don't want to expose them to drastic temperature changes. It can damage the gemstones so don't leave peridot gemstone jewelry in cars during summer or winter.

The safest way to clean peridot is with warm, soapy water. Do not clean peridot gemstones in a home ultrasonic cleaner. And don't let it come in contact with chemicals so take peridot jewelry off before you use cleaning products. Periodot gemstones need protection from scratches and sharp blows too.

Jewelers are challenged when cutting Peridot because it is fragile. For this reason, the largest cut peridot is 310 carats which is small compared to other gemstones. Periodt gemstones should be separated from other gemstones in your jewelry box. A soft, cloth bag is a wonderful way to store them.

Origin of Birthstones

Birthstones are thought to have become popular in Poland during the 15th or 16th century. At that time, they believed the magic powers of gemstones were higher during certain months. Therefore, gems were worn during the month of its higher powers. It was later in America that birthstones became popular to wear all year because of the birth month.

Qualities of the August Birthstone

According to Wikipedia, peridot, is the only gemstone found in meteroites. However, it's recently been discovered that many meteroites are diamonds. The peridot gemstone is thought to bring power and influence to their owners.

Folklore says the peridot gemstone helps dreams become reality and protects against nightmares. Peridot gemstones are mentioned in the Bible as pitdah. Along with other gemstones, peridot were probably used in the breastplates of the Jewish high priest.

Ground peridot, taken internally, was once used as a treatment for asthma. Peridot gemstones, pronounced pair-a-doe or pair-a-dot, are given for the 16th wedding anniversary besides being the August birthstone.

Jeffrey, I'm sure your mother would love pearls and you can find them in many price ranges. Good luck. Remember, it's the thought that counts.

My mother is fond of jewelry and
louis vuitton handbags. It's her birthday next week and I am still confused about what to buy? How about some jewelry in pearls. I think it looks elegant. But how much does it cost? I hope they are not too expensive.

I have an August birthday so this is especially interesting to me. My first 'real' jewelry was a peridot ring. Wonderful read.
