August is somewhat of a slow month in Phoenix, mostly because of the heat, but that doesn't mean you have to stay at home until September arrives. There are still concerts, festivals, tours, and other Phoenix-area events you can take advantage of in August.
Two of the most popular musical performers in the world will be at the Cricket Wireless Pavilion on August 5. A mix of rock, rap, and country is the perfect way to cap off a hot summer week, especially if you haven't been to a concert in a while.
The show starts at six o'clock, and classic rock musician Leroy Powell opens. This is an excellent date night option, though tween and teen kids might also enjoy it. Just make sure you hurry and buy your tickets, as these concerts tend to sell out.
If comedy is more your style, Lisa Lampanelli, the Queen of Mean, performs at the Comerica Theater on August 6 at 7 p.m. This is definitely a show for the over-eighteen crowd, so consider it for a date night or an evening out with friends. Ticket prices start at $32.75.
Over the last fifteen-plus years, the Warped Tour has become one of the most popular concert events in the world. Bands ranging from Less Than Jake to D.R.U.G.S., to The Wonder Years perform in front of sold-out crowds. This year, Warped Tour comes to Phoenix on August 7, at the Ashley Furniture Homestore Pavilion.
On August 13, visit the Phoenix Zoo for Prowl and Play, a special after-hours event for both members and non-members. Cool off from 6 to 9:30 p.m. with animal meet-and-greets, water gun wars, and even camel rides. Plus, if you purchase tickets for Prowl and Play, you get $1 off your regular zoo admission earlier in the day.
Ride the carousel, play video games, or just walk from one exhibit to the next at your leisure. The Phoenix Zoo is definitely more enjoyable later in the evening, when the sun has lost some of its juice and the wind picks up a bit.
Arizona Diamondbacks Grand Slam
August means nothing more than baseball in many families, and the Arizona Diamondbacks offer several packages to help you get your fix. The Grand Slam package is one of the most popular; the package gives you tickets to four games (two in August, two in September) at Chase Field in Phoenix. The air-conditioned stadium lets you root for your favorite team in comfort, and everyone who purchases Grand Slam tickets gets a special giveaway at each game. Plus, you get a $10 gas card. Can't beat that.
