Augusten Burroughs Addiction in Running With Scissors

W1NE
When I first picked up the book "Running with Scissors" I was somewhat skeptical. In my experience the majority of memoirs tend to be somewhat depressing and dull. My first rule in reading however that is you should read at least two chapters of any book before having the right to criticize its content. I had considered reading this book before but the thought ended up at the back of my mind. One day while watching "The View" the book came up throughout their conversation and once again I made a mental note to read it. This time I ended up remembering and actually just bought the book.

Once I opened it up and began reading I was instantly addicted. I try to read every night assuming I am not so exhausted I don't pass out when hitting my pillow. In other cases I read to bring on the exhaustion or to break the horrid "up all night" routine I find myself getting into. When I would pick up "Running with Scissors" I actually always had a hard time putting it down. Strangely the book not only kept me highly entertained but I found myself thinking about it throughout the day as well. I just had to know what was going to happen next. Augusten Burroughs is like book worms crack. I actually recall becoming somewhat disappointed as I neared the end of the book because I wanted the story of his dysfunctional yet somewhat comical life to continue. Alas the book did eventually end and I was stuck looking for some new bedtime reading material. What to read? What to read? I did a search on Augusten Burroughs. I found another book. The name of it was "Dry"

"Dry" was apparently written after "Running with Scissors" and told the story of Augusten Burroughs after the original book. The book focuses mainly on his alcohol addiction and the complications that arose from his excess and what he did to try and overcome them. Yet another book I can't seem to put down and cringe at the thought of finishing. Augusten has a way with words that is indescribable. He somehow manages to take the most raw and intimate thoughts of the human mind and add a touch of humor to them. You end up not only being able to relate to a certain extent but also laugh at the similarities in his thought process at times.

The problem I will soon encounter however is what to read next. I have recently looked up what books he has written and assume I will continue reading his material until I run out of thing's he has written. I feel as if no other author in the history of mankind will add up to the comedy and drama of his memoirs. If you are a reader and haven't read his material, I highly suggest you do. If your anything like me, you won't be disappointed!

Lol "Augesten Burroughs is like book worms crack." I totally agree, I could not put down his books either. His sense of humor is so dry and self-deprecating; I think it's how he survived his life! Great review.
