August's End

These days of in-between:

the grass baked golden brown,

the corn with chestnut heads.

.
August heat lies like a heavy quilt,

comforting and dry,

around the corners--

just a curl of cool .
.

This slivered season

sits before the fire,

while falling leaves and snow

wait right outside the door.
