Aunt Matilda is Late for Thanksgiving Dinner

J Hammon
Thanksgiving's a day I'm a lovin',
The turkey is roastin' in the oven,

The buns and stuffing are baking,
Turkey gravy is in the making,

Buttery mashed potatoes on the stove await --
Once again Aunt Matilda is running late.

Top the green bean casserole with French fried onions,
By the time this day is or'e my feet will have bunions!

Oh no! The creamed corn is burning!
For Aunt Matilda's arrival I'm yearning.

Set the table -- there's ice water to pour,
Take cranberry salad from the 'frigerator,

Cut the apple, pumpkin and pecan pie,
It's one pm and Grandfather's clock don't lie.

Aunt Matilda finally arrives with sweet potato soufflé,
Everyone gathers round so Uncle Herman can pray.

Uncle Ray carves the turkey and we load up our plates,
Eating too much food -- a problem Thanksgiving creates.

Time shared with family is a wondrous tradition,
To nap after this feast -- you have my permission!
