Description
The spray I purchased comes in a tall metal aerosol can. I know I'm killing the environment, and I have absolutely no good reason for not using pump, except that it doesn't work as well on my hair. Maybe by giving me a product that doesn't work, someone is trying to tell me to stop depleting the ozone layer? The can does say that it does not have the ingredient that causes ozone depletion, though. I'm not a scientist, so I really have no idea about this. Guilt aside, though, and on to the review.
Net Weight is 10oz/283 g. Probably for any normal person, this amount could last several months. But, I have very curly, unmanageable hair, and I typically go through a can of hair spray in less than two months. The hold is "maximum" hold.
Ingredients
The top ingredients are: Water, Dimethyl Ether, Alcohol Denat, Diglycol/Chdm/Isophthalates/Sip Copolymer, Octylacrylamide/Acrylates/butylaminoethyl, Methacrylate Copolymer
The ingredients that make up the scent are: Anigozanthos Flavidus Flower Extract, Prunus Serotina (Wild Cherry), Bark Extract, Mentha Piperita (peppermint) Leaf Extract, Aloe Barbadensis Leaf, And Kangaroo Paw Flower Extract (whatever on earth that might be).
Now, of course, to a layman like myself, none of the above means anything expect that this product has a lot of junk it. If the junk serves a purpose fine, but in my opinion, this junk did not.
My Opinion
The first complaint I have about this spray is the horrible, foul smell. I saw in almost every other review that the scent was rated pleasant. I don't know if I just have an overly sensitive sense of smell, or if the fragrance of this product has changed over time. Regardless; to me it is awful. One of the things that I normally love about Aussie products is the pleasant, almost fruity scent, and this was nothing like what I am used to. And, based on the ingredients above, I am not surprised. Aloe, Peppermint, and Wild Cherry do not seem a winning combination to me. Each on its own is fine, but together creates a bit of a mess.
Complaint number two is the hold. I always buy maximum control hair spray because my hair is really a nightmare if it's not plastered to my head. This spray gives the illusion of a strong hold for about ten minutes, and then I feel as if I haven't used it at all, except for the sticky feel to it, which I thought was excessive. The harder it is to get the spray to hold, the more I have to use, and with this brand of Aussie spray, I'm constantly reapplying.
In addition to the sticky feel, the spray also gets flaky once applied. The more I use, the more the spray flakes and leaves a white substance on my hair that looks like dandruff or fuzz, depending on how thick it is. The last thing I want from my hair products are to make my hair look or feel dirty, and that's exactly what this spray does. The can says it will make hair shiny, but in my experience, it does just the opposite. So, it smells bad and it makes my hair look unwashed. Two big negatives in my book.
There isn't much I can say about Aussie Dual Personality Hair Spray that is positive, but the one plus in its favor is the label on the side titled "Earth Info". As I mentioned in the beginning of this review, the can states that the spray contains no CFCs, which deplete the ozone layer. Although I'm not sure how accurate this is, if it is true, then it makes me feel a tiny bit better about using it. Unfortunately, it might be the CFCs, whatever they are, that help the spray hold firm, which would answer the question about why this one doesn't work. This is only an assumption, though. I have another can of Aussie spray, different type that says the same thing but holds well, so my theory is probably incorrect.
Cost and where to purchase
The cost of Aussie Dual Personality Hair Spray is about $3.99 + tax and can be purchased in any grocery store or drug store. Most likely I purchased it at Target. I don't know how easy it is to find, as I was not specifically looking for it. I have had trouble in the past finding Aussie products that I do like. But, since I will not buy this product again, it's irrelevant to me whether or not it will be available in future.
Bottom line
I can't think of a single thing about this hair spray that would make me recommend it. If one is really looking for a good Aussie spray that smells nice and holds well, try Aussie Instant Freeze Extreme Hold instead.
