Austin has long been recognized as the most progressive city in Texas. Because of the medical center, the location of the university here, and many other reasons, it has a very diverse population willing and eager to sample foreign foods of every sort. Asian-Fusion cooking draws thousands of Austin residents and travelers to some of the many excellent Asian restaurants in the city.

Koriente seems to be a real favorite for everyone because of the delicious food and the low prices. They serve eclectic Asian dishes in Chinese, Japanese, Vietnamese and Taiwanese styles. Another enticement is the good service and the great freebie side dishes they throw in during lunch-time. They'll also substitute fresh vegs for rice and regulate the spiciness as per customer desires. Lunch is served from 11:30-2:30/ Dishes like the spicy chicken bulgogi and the humus wraps are indicative of the range of flavors available at this place. Seaweed wraps, gourmet vegetarian curries, and Kalbi Potroast for just $8. Other entrees are all at $6 or $7. The most expensive appetizers are just $4. You can't beat this place with a stick. That's why they've been written up with praises in the Austin Monthly and the Austin-American Statesman. And, who can miss their beautiful gardens outside. They also do delivery and catering and their parking is free.

Mekong River Restaurant is the real deal Vietnamese food and not just fusion American style. Meats and vegetables are super fresh here. They make their own delicious nouc cham sauce which doubles as a salad dressing, dipping sauce and general flavoring, with a spicy-sweet fish sauce base heavy with garlic, chilis and lime. Their sauces are never heavily pasty or laden with cornstarch, as many Chinese dishes are, and the cooking emphasizes many herbs like cilantro, Chinese basil, lemongrass and mint. Their specialties are the many curries and seafood dishes. New York strips grilled with lime juice, mint, fresh cilantro and dried chilis is only $11.95. Vegetables used are tomatoes, chilis, carrots, Asian cabbage, broccoli, scallions, mushrooms and so many more. Real Vietnamese soups are entire meals unto themselves. The egg rolls have nothing in common with the typical awful, heavy egg rolls of American understanding. They're lightly encased in delicate, crisp rice paper wraps and dipped in nouc cham. Again, a meal unto themselves. Try their fresh blended fruit drinks if you want to drink your vegetables! Mekong has moderate pricing, so is great for the budget-minded and for students. They're open Mon-Thu, and Sun, 10:30 a.m.-10:00 p.m.; Fri-Sat 10:30 a.m.-11:00 p.m.

Kapro Leaf is definitely Fusion Asian cooking, with smatterings of authentic Vietnamese , Japanese, Burmese, Thai and Chinese dishes for purists. Their menu of entrees offers many fish and seafood delicacies not often on Asian menus, such as Spicy Snapper, soft-shelled crab and Chilean Sea Bass. They serve fresh house salads with these entrees, but with a house Japanese dressing for those who want it. Patrons can choose their level of heat from the menu and this restaurant has a limited children's' menu for the convenience of family diners. Prices are moderate, with entrees ranging from about $10-$18, depending on market prices for some fish.
Ka Pro's owner, Opart Udomsatapol, has been written up in several national publications with glowing acclaim. This north Austin restaurant seems to be one of the area's best.
