Australian Mothers Day Brunch Recipes

Sharon
Mothers are universally promoted and revered on mother's day, Christians and Jewish are told to honour their mother; Tara is the Tibetan mother goddess, sitting cross legged and holding a blue lotus she is revered as the one who saves; Ancient Egyptians believe a good mother is depicted by animal connotation; Ancient Greek mythologists hold a festival to Cybele, a great mother of Greek gods and may well be where mother's day comes from.

It doesn't matter what religion or nationality, Mothers deserve to be pampered on mother's day.

Pampering will be as different for each mother as there are mothers. Some may enjoy sitting on a comfortable couch while someone does their nails and another is cooking brunch. Another mother may enjoy brunch in bed, yet someone else may enjoy many people over for brunch whereas someone else will want peace and quiet on mother's day. Whatever you do, make it memorable for your mother.

A popular activity in Australia is going to the beach and having fish and chips for mother's day, it frees up mum from cooking and the family have a great time playing cricket.

Alternatively, it is very popular throughout the world to make brunch for your mother, not by your mother.

Here is a uniquely Australian mother's day brunch that can easily be prepared by the kids, or even the hubby.

Barbeque Prawns

Paul Hogan made the quote, "slip a shrimp on the barbie" famous in the tourism advertisements in the late eighties, so what better dish to accompany an Australian brunch.

4 King prawns per person (peeled and cleaned)

Garlic

Soy Sauce

Oil

Pre cook prawns, shell and marinate in garlic and soy sauce. (At least 3 hours or even overnight)

Heat Barbeque grill and lightly fry Prawns in oil until heated through, brushing with marinade to keep moist.

Place prawns in bowls and eat with toothpicks. Serve with a simple salad.

Simple Brunch Salad

1 Lettuce

100gm Sundried tomatoes

200gm Feta cheese

Rip up a whole lettuce and add sundried tomatoes and crumbled feta cheese. Use the sundried tomato marinade as a dressing for the salad.

Juice Punch

1 3l Can Fruit Juice

2l bottle of soda water

1 can fruit salad

Mix all the ingredients together and stir, this juice punch is very nice topped with mint. And will go along way for extra visitors throughout the day.

While you are feasting on garlic prawns and salad, have damper cooking.

Damper was a traditional aboriginal food and has always been associated with the Aussie bushman.

Australian Pancakes-Damper

Self raising flour

Water

Oil

Mix the flour and enough water to form a dough, need and add a little oil for a smooth consistency. Break off fist size balls and roll into a ball. Flatten the ball to 1cm thick and fry in a little oil. The dough will slightly rise and can be dusted with sugar and lemon juice, topped with Jam or for savoury, top with Vegemite.

An Australian Brunch would not be complete without brewed coffee or tea.

Personalise your table decor by laying a paper table cloth and providing felt tipped pens for everyone to write a special mother's day message, Littlies can trace their handprints and even biggies can draw a picture. Above all, have fun with your mum this mother's day, joke and laugh and don't forget to wash up to really bless your mum.

I think in every culture there are variations on these pancakes. I have seen mothers in PNG make pancakes like these with riceflour and coconut milk. In Fiji they make roti, which Ihave an idea comes from India.

The Australian Pancakes sound like something very similar that they make here in Thailand. Nice article.
