Australian Zoo Coming to Las Vegas

Could an Australian Themed Zoo Come to Las Vegas

Mary Kirkland
Since 2004, before Steve Irwin's sudden death the talk of an Australian themed zoo has been talked about and then put on hold and is now being talked about again.

According to crocodilehunter.com "It would be the greatest marketing tool for Australian tourism on the face of the earth," Steve Irwin said back in 2004. He was speaking of the Zoo being in Las Vegas.

What would the zoo have?

Steve Irwin was known worldwide for trying to bring conservation knowledge to the public. Having a zoo that showcases Australian wildlife in Las Vegas would bring his dream on step closer to happening. Las Vegas, where I currently live is known by those that live here as the Entertainment Capital of the World. What better place to get a lot of people from different places around the world coming to their zoo.

Before Steve Irwin's sudden and sad death, he was working with Las Vegas officials to bring the zoo to the state. According to 8newsnow.com, "I had folks from Steve Irwin's zoo in Australia come up and talk to me about having a zoo downtown," said Las Vegas Mayor Oscar Goodman.

Besides Crocodile wrestling, the animals at the zoo could be platypuses, koalas and wombats. This would be an Australian themed zoo with animals found in Australia. The zoo could offer up to 900 new jobs and Terri Irwin hopes to purchase the land for the site before the end of the year.

How much would it cost to build?

According to Perthnow.com, "Australia Zoo, the wildlife park owned by the family of the late Crocodile Hunter Steve Irwin, is pushing ahead with a $250 million (US) plan to replicate the Australian tourist attraction in the gambling Mecca of Las Vegas." Terri Irwin also said, "It's hard to predict how the economy is going to recover but we'd hope by next year we'd have the investors so we can look towards a date for breaking ground."

The Las Vegas Zoo

Many may not know this but Las Vegas already has a zoo, it's located at 1775 North Ranch Drive Las Vegas, Nevada. 89106. The Director of the Zoo, Pat Dingle has been the person most responsible for keeping this little zoo alive. Pat has been seen on our local news and in interviews about the zoo on local television.

Our Las Vegas Zoo might not be as big as zoo's in places like San Diego or Australia, but I'm wondering what will happen to the Las Vegas Zoo when a bigger zoo, like the Australian zoo, comes to town. For years they have been the only zoo in Las Vegas and the only zoo in Nevada open to tourists year round.

According to lasvegaszoo.com, "There are a variety of endangered cats as well as the last family of Barbary Apes in the United states, chimpanzee, eagles, ostriches, emus, talking parrots, wallabies, flamingos, large exotic reptiles and every species of venomous reptile native to Southern Nevada. The zoo also features exhibits by the Las Vegas Gem Club and botanical displays of endangered cycads and rare bamboos."

Wombats rule! After spending a few months in Melbourne, I want to move there SO bad. Their wildlife is brilliant. I think this would be a fabulous attraction for Vegas.
