Author of "Angela's Ashes" Dies at 78

Frank McCourt has died at the age of seventy-eight.

Mr. McCourt grew up in Limerick, Ireland under the care of an alcoholic father and a mother made desperate by poverty and a life full of pain. He turned this experience into one of the most popular contemporary books, the memoir "Angela's Ashes". The book was as sad in content as Ireland itself is of rain but McCourt applied that resilient Irish characteristic of biting humour in the face of hardship which made his story palatable, and in some places, actually laugh out loud funny. It was also easily readable and hence spent some time on the top of bestsellers lists.

He followed this with "'Tis" and "Teacher Man". He may have been the first to make a trilogy in the genre of memoir. His brother also offered memoirs of his own to answer and/or suppliment McCourt's. But it was "Angela's Ashes" that was most enduring of all these works, even becoming a Hollywood movie.

The New York Times carried a full obituary in his honour, which can be read here: www.nytimes.com/2009/07/20/books/20mccourt.html
