Author Loves the Nerds

Vicki Lewis Thompson Gives the Nerds Some Love

Nerds, geeks and various intellectuals have been social outcasts and mocked for years. However, with the increasing awareness of how important technology and information is, this widely varied group of men and women are becoming cool. You can see it in various forms of media and social networking, and I for one am glad of this change, and not simply because I am one of many forms of geek.

Vicki Lewis Thompson writes romance novels of many sub-genres, but one of my favorite is her collection of nerd or geek romance. All right, so it is not really its own sub-genre, at least not that I am aware of, but she has a group of books that fit the title. At my last count, there were seven books in her Nerd series, and I have read and loved every one. They are each stand-alone novels, with the nerd theme being the only connecting factor, so you do not need to read them in any specific order. The books are light, funny and a little steamy.

Nerd in Shining Armor was the first book in the collection. The Nerd Who Loved Me, Nerd Gone Wild, Gone with the Nerd, Talk Nerdy to Me, Nerds Like it Hot and My Nerdy Valentine complete the collection as it currently stands. All of the books follow a general formula, but in a good way. A spunky heroine is in mortal danger with only a nerd to save her. Attraction and friendship form, making the transition from co-worker or acquaintance move along faster. Nerd steps up and surprises his companion and crush with his skill and ingenuity. There is some more danger and some serious smooching with some banter and entertaining one-liners tossed in for good measure. Now, this might sound like I am not recommending this book, or the ones that follow, but that cannot be farther from the truth. I absolutely adore this series and the author in general. Fun, light reads are often just what I need after a long day at work or trying to use logic to change the mind of a toddler.

Vicki Lewis Thompson also writes a series of paranormal romance that deal with magical matchmakers, but also often feature a nerdy character in the romantic relationship, and several different romance series with Harlequin. I have not explored her Harlequin books so I cannot speak on them specifically but I do not rule them out as future additions to my to be read list.
