Author and Studio Mogul, Stephen J. Cannel Passes October 1, 2010

At first I thought she was spoofing about Stephen J. Cannel when she left a comment and RIP on my article about his book signing. Jada Temple, also an Associated Content writer, started her remark with RIP.

Being so close to Halloween I thought, in disbelief, that maybe this remark was supposed to be part of the Halloween season. Instantly, I searched his name and found the sad news to be true. I cried.

Complications with melanoma caused his death.

I have never met anyone who affected me so much in one single hour as this man did. I had been to several book signings in Vero Beach. All were enjoyable, but Stephen Cannel's had a personal bent.

Like me, he was dyslexic. He was so humble and personable describing his life struggles, that in the end, I really wanted very much to see him fulfill his dream as a novel writer.

He was such a hard worker, and had made such a triumph of his life in the movie industry with his productions like "Rockford Files," and "Adam 12" just to name a few.

During the question/answer period at the end of Cannel's talk, someone asked him what his favorite genre is. He answered that he felt most uninhibited when novel writing, so for that simple reason he let his passions run when working in this medium.

After having heard about his struggles with his schooling, and the long hard hours he put in at Paramount Studios, I felt happy for him that he was finally doing what he really wanted to do.

Stephen Cannel also made a point to acknowledge how much his wife, Marcia, had been a pillar in his life. His love for her seemed to be abundant.

I did a little math while Cannel told his life story, and figured him to be close to seventy. He looked really good, and I just thought he was entering the prime of his writing career. I could see many good years ahead for him.

He passed away on October first in the autumn of his life, after having bequeathed his talents to the world against all odds. RIP, Stephen Cannell, I'll never forget you.

I wasn't even aware he had anything to do with movies, but I used to watch--and still do--a lot of his TV shows.
