Author's Retraction on the Fruitcake Toss Day Story

J.E. Ward
The story published Dec. 29 titledFruitcake Toss Day is January 3, 2011 includes incorrect information. The event will be held the first Saturday after New Years, which is Jan. 8. The article stated the event that takes place in Manitou Springs, Colorado would happen on Monday, Jan. 3.

I was informed of the article's inaccuracies in the comments section of the story by someone signing in as "Great Fruitcake." This was the comment:

As spokesperson for The Great Fruitcake Recycling Project, and expert on all things fruitcake in Colorado, I attend the Fruitcake Toss every year to make sure the fruitcakes are disposed of responsibly. The date you listed for the toss is incorrect. It is always the first Saturday after the first of January. This year's toss is Saturday, January 8. I didn't see a link to their website in the story. It's http://manitousprings.org.

First I would like to apologize to the spokesperson of The Great Fruitcake Recycling Project in Colorado as well as the citizens of Manitou Springs. My apologies to my readers who depend on me for accurate reporting.

Some have asked if I was going to delete the comment left by Great Fruitcake. The answer is no. Yes, it is embarassing and humbling for it to sit there for all the world to see that I messed up on an article that will probably not earn me very much money. It is a reminder, however, that all of us make mistakes, and that we who take it upon ourselves to report the facts should double check for accuracy. Or should I say inaccuracies.

In my defense, I first learned about "Fruitcake Toss Day" on Jan. 3, 2011 from the calendar on the website where I blog - www.praize.com. They will be informed of the date's inaccuracies in my blog tomorrow morning. Also, I did visit the Manitou Springs website and accidentally overlooked listing them at the end of my article along with the other sources.

Great job going above and beyond to make sure you fixed your mistake. I, for one, think that's the sign of a great writer. :)

Thank you for pointing out the source of the inaccuracy. Pray with me that when the new www.praize.com website is introduced (scheduled for late February) that all inaccuracies on the site will be corrected. In the meantime, my deepest apologies.

Dates conflict quite often. It is great when someone is able to offer the correct one. I have sometimes communicated with "the one who knows" only to end up referring others to that person, since no feedback arrives. It reminds me of the joke about the one who doesn't show up to the meeting is volunteered for the awful parts. Glad the Great Fruitcake dropped by - he or she is on top of things :)
