Statehouse Rallies
Many states have rallies at the statehouse or other government buildings that feature speakers and information booths. To set up a rally with your local or state government contact your local representative or your local government's public relations department.
Fundraising
Holding a fundraiser is a great way to increase autism awareness and give money to organizations that promote autism research and awareness. Here are some websites to consult for handouts and information to use at your event: www.autism-society.org, www.autism.com/ari, www.autismspeaks.org, and www.unlockingautism.org.
Bake sales, 5K runs/walks, yard and garage sales, auctions (including online), and community carnivals are all great events that are generally successful at raising money and that offer community and media exposure.
Articles
Write an article or opinion piece and send it to your local paper. Highlight places that community members can turn to find more information about autism and local resources.
Help out those close to you
If you know someone who has Asperger's Syndrome or autism do something nice for them. Babysit for some parents who have children with autism, help take the kids out for a fun time, or volunteer to help out with a classroom or group of individuals with autism.
By getting rid of the myths and misconceptions about autism, helping out those in your family and community, and remembering to be compassionate you can greatly improve the lives of those affected by autism.
