It takes energy to pay attention, to think, to learn and to fight infections. So the child's system might be saying, "I am trying to learn and you are forcing me to fight these battles to develop immunities. I don't have that much energy, so I'll give up communication because I need to stay healthy, how can keep with both?" It's much like the slow student being distracted by the noise outside, their attention is divided. Now when adults get sick they make all sorts of mistakes in concentration, they withdraw, and rest. Why should a child or baby be any different?
Take a baby who is just learning, make them sick, then expose them to too much stuff. What you have is a child who may not learn at that time what needed to be learned. This could be just like adults checking out mentally when sick, a sick baby may do the same, but baby has no way to get back. Adults get frustrated when you overload them why not babies? Adults say I am sick leave me alone. Why would a baby not to that?
Now adults and animals associated events with the people around them. So what if the child associates the ill feelings with those around them, like parents or doctors. The child withdraws from them and focuses on other things that are in their minds not the cause of the bad feels, and so fail to learn certain skills, and fail to bond to people. In fact the child may be avoid interaction because people are the cause in their world.
Maybe this does not happen to all kids but for those who are the 2% percent of the group then it's trouble. I had wisdom teeth taken out, I was also in the 2% that had an unusually reaction to the painkillers. In a world where some are energized by social contact and some are not, take a child who is not energized then make them sick, and then make them try and learn social skills. Add in being in the minority who react wrong to your drugs. Like a sick student in class room filled with noise they don't learn the lesson of the day and fall further behind as the days go on. In truth the pressure on their system is such they may just check out to a safe place.
Free-range chickens are healthier than those chickens raised in cages and stuffed with drugs. Maybe we need more free-range kids?
