Auto Erotic Asphyxiation Today

Death and Love

Jerrilee Fox
With the "mysterious" death of the much beloved actor David Carradine rearing its ugly head in the media, the question of death by masturbation is also making its round on online forums.

In search of some information more meaningful then the grisly details of death and dismemberment via masturbation techniques that are easily located, I found some interesting facts that I would like to share.

In my research it was easy to see that a significant number of people die in auto erotic asphyxiation incidents every year and its not just men and teenage boys, there is a small percentage of women that die the same way.

Between 250 and 1000 people die in the United States alone, as a matter of fact thirty percent of suicides by males between age 12 and 20 are attributed to auto erotic asphyxiation, and that number is possibly low. Considering the fact that family members usually find the bodies, and have been known to clean up the evidence and report the incident as a suicide its difficult to pinpoint the number.

Auto erotic asphyxiation, also known as breathplay, edgeplay, or scarfing is a practice in which the subject deprives their brain of oxygen in order to induce euphoria and hallucinations, which is in turn supposed to heighten climax.

It may seem extreme to people that live basically "vanilla" lives, which is a term that means that people have lives and relationships that do not include any "creative" sex practices. However, asphyxiation is seen as extreme in many BDSM circles as it pushes the "safe, sane and consensual" ideal followed by the majority of the sect.

Seen as early as the 1600, and other then Carradine's death, as recently in Pop Culture as 1996 when musician song writer Kevin Gilbert was found dead in Los Angeles. It was officially reported as "asphyxiation by partial suspension hanging," though later was more accurately reported on by MTV and Gilbert's friends.

There are many ways for a person to perform auto erotic asphyxiation, though I will not be discussion any of them here, I do wish to point out that when death occurs, some of these methods sometimes make it difficult to distinguish the real cause of death.

It is a dangerous past time, and though death is not always the end, there are numberless reports of people doing irrevocable damage to themselves in the pursuit of a better climax. Death and brain damage are common consequences, and coupled with the excess that some will go to, disfigurement and dismemberment have also been reported.

There are ways to practice this act in a "safer" manner, though depriving one's self of oxygen is never a safe or sane practice, a buddy system is recommended. Either a trusted lover or nonjudgmental friend being near by to check the situation every few minutes is ideal.

There is a plethora of information on the act, as well as other self pleasure techniques that can lead to a more satisfying experience without the possibility of brain damage, or worse.
