Autumn Adulation

Autumn Poem

Karen Nethery Alves

Melancholy settles like a well-worn quilt
mysteriously too short now to cover my feet
leaving me chilled and dissatisfied
yearning for warmth

Sleepy summer days left behind
in a whirl of tumbling leaves
and frosty morning window etchings
a prophecy of winter

Scarecrow princes on summer's abandoned Adirondack thrones
grandpa's garden gloves extending from thrift store flannel shirts
proclaiming the season
to pumpkin faced subjects in gardens of straw flowers

Sunset burning through blushing clouds
highlights of gold and orange on every turning leaf
a perfect photograph for an autumn postcard
"wish you were here"

Enormous glowing moon emerging from the hills
now yellow now beige now white
climbing the trees in silhouette
October's signature piece

Warmth at last - smoky and crackling
a lively red hot jester
with hat of flaming points
advancing and retreating with each breezy gust

Mounds of autumn's leafy harvest
feeding the ravenous jester
delighting icy nosed spectators
with cold outstretched hands

Day becomes Night
Fall, a memory
