Autumn Wood's Walk

Poetry Describing an Autumn Walk Down the Wood's Road

Rue Cooper
"Walking in Autumn Woods"

Evening shadows hung in hoods
autumn coldness, scented woods
down drifted leaves that died
and wind, contented, sighed
fox grapes purpled leaf-strewn streams
box turtle's dreams
gold was all around
an Eden found
sumac scarlet, poison ivy
climbing high a knotty-pine tree
all was crystals, jeweled, around me
yet still my feet kept striding
and high a half-moon riding
on past ferns and yellowed fronds
red dogwood berries, sleeping ponds
squirrels frisky, fast at play
deer that watched, but did not stay
from fields that smelled of clover hay
a katydid, in lonesome solo
sang to firefly's dimming, dusk-glow
oh, if I could, I'd stop the fall
and ever after keep it all!
