Autumn's Appalachian Woods

Poetry from an Autumn Woods-walk in the Foothills of the Appalachian Mountains in Pennsylvania

Rue Cooper
Woods Walk

evening shadows hung in hoods
autumn coldness scented woods
down drifted leaves that died
and wind, contented, sighed
fox grapes purpled leaf strew streams
box turtles dreams
gold was all around
an Eden found
sumac scarlet, poison ivy
climbed up high a knotty-pine tree
all was crystals, jeweled around me
yet still my feet kept striding
and high a half-moon riding
on past ferns and yellowed fronds
red dogwood berries, sleeping ponds
squirrels frisky, fast at play
deer that watched, but did not stay
from fields that smelled of clover hay
a katydid in lonesome solo
sang to firefly's dimming dusk-glow
oh, if I could, I'd stop the fall
and ever after, keep it all

You've captured the image so well. I like fall, too.
