Avandia and Heart Attacks: Will the FDA Remove Avandia from the Market?

If Heart Attacks Are Being Caused by Avandia, Consumers May Want it Removed from the Market

Pat Anthony
With the Food and Drug Administration understanding there is a safety issue with Avandia, consumers may wonder if they should be concerned. Avandia is used to treat type 2 diabetes.

Some studies suggest an increased risk of heart attacks may occur in those using Avandia for their diabetes. However, other studies show this information is not correct.

It is suggested that any patient taking Avandia to treat diabetes should consult with their physician about options. Especially those with heart disease or with risk factors for heart disease who are using Avandia for diabetes should learn what options are available.

Avandia has not been removed from the market. The FDA wants to be assured those using the product understand the possible potential for increasing the chance of heart attacks. There have been several updates to Avandia information for patients as new study results are released.

Some studies suggest Avandia would be safe for use in treating type 2 diabetes if prescribed at a lower dose. For details about this please use the link titled ABC News Health below this article.

Studies have prompted some to state that Avandia should be removed from the market now. A decision has not been made by the FDA at this time. For more information use the ABC News link below.

The prescription medication Avandia has been used since 1999 for the treatment of type 2 diabetes. Diabetes may cause heart disease. However, some have heart disease before they are diagnosed with diabetes.

All patients using Avandia will have the most recent information available through the FDA warnings for their consideration.
