The most popular is Avast Home for personal use.
Some virus software packages can run between $30-$150. Avast is the best free anti-virus protection on the market. It is free if you use it for home or non-commercial use; just register your download for continued use after the trial expires.
If you transfer files from computer to computer, from work to home, from class to class, etc., the next thing you know, your computer will be in jeopardy. If you will be connecting your laptop online at the library, work, in class, in the dorm room, or at the local coffee shop, you are open to viruses and other forms of computer attacks. Avast will give you, and your computer, a great deal of top quality security.
Avast Anti-Virus Home edition provides anti-spyware (malware that collects information about users without their knowledge), and rookits (software that consists of a program or programs designed to hide the fact that a computer has already been compromised.). Avast has Strong Self-protection to protect the anti-virus software from being turned off by viruses. The Antivirus Kernel is the latest version of Avast which detects 100% of viruses that are already spreading between users, also called "In the Wild" as well as detection of Trojan horses. Avast Professional Edition offers different price plans depending on the number of licenses purchased. After a 60 day trial, a license key must be purchased for continued use for 1 to up to 200 workstations.
Avast Home is highly recommended for home and/or personal use. There are many other free antivirus software programs for download but after several trails, Avast home stands clearly above the rest.
Other recommended Free AntiVirus Softwares are also available:
AVG Free (freeware)
Avira AntiVir Personal (nagware)
Comodo (freeware)
Dr. Web (freeware)
Panda Cloud Antivirus (freeware)
PC Tools (freeware)
