Avast! Caused Critical Problems on My Sister's Laptop

Cэвбо
Today is a not so good day especially for my younger sister's laptop. It is a normal habit of some people (including my sister) to download as many free anti virus solutions as possible. I did it once before just to see which free anti virus solution was the best for my pc. It is easy to say that after my years of using a computer & free anti virus that AVG free edition is the best anti solution for my pc. I can recall about telling my younger sister about it too.

Nonetheless, she went ahead & installed the Avast! free anti virus solution on her laptop. Some of you readers have possibly experienced what she had experienced. After installing Avast! on her laptop, the laptop ceased to function normally. Windows XP became unresponsive. It was so critical that I was unable to open the hard drive files & any other computer applications. Also, you will be unable to delete the Avast! from the computer by going through the usual channel which is the delete installed programs in the control panel.

Attempting to Find a Solution to the Avast! Problem on Laptop

As usual I would have to be the one to figure out how to fix the problem. I could not even find the folder in the Program Files of C: in order to delete the Avast! from the laptop manually. After texting my little sister that she should send the laptop to a computer technician so that any data on the hard drive can be saved & the hard drive reformatted. I must admit, it was the worst case scenario kind of solution.

I had one last option for the attempt. I had to ask my advisor; the good old internet for a less drastic solution. I typed in Avast! troubleshoot in the web browser & looked for some information to help me fix the situation. After a few mouse clicks, bringing me to forums & Avast! related websites, I finally arrived onto a web page. It showed how somebody was having similar problems with the Avast! anti virus. Well, not exactly like my problem but the info helped.

I don't know whether the person had dysfunctional Windows after installing Avast anti virus on his/her pc but the question was 'How to Delete Avast Anti Virus?' Great, maybe I can just delete the Avast from the laptop & all hell will freeze over. Check out how to uninstall Avastat the Avast.com website or just use the instruction as below listed. Nonetheless you still have to download the aswClear exe file from Avast.com.

avast! uninstall utility

Sometimes it's not possible to uninstall Avast! the standard way - using the ADD/REMOVE PROGRAMS in control panel. In this case, you can use our uninstallation utility aswClear.

How to uninstall our software using aswClear.exe:

Download aswClear.exe on to your desktop

Start Windows in Safe Mode

Open (execute) the uninstall utility

If you installed avast! in a different folder than the default, browse for it. (Note: Be careful! The content of any folder you choose will be deleted!)

Click REMOVE

Restart your computer

It's a good thing that I could use my flash drive to copy the aswClear.exe program into the laptop after downloading it using the other computer. By the way, did I tell you that the Avast anti virus messed up the wireless connection to the internet on my sister's Dell laptop too? Well, it happened. Perhaps you can initiate the aswClear.exe program directly from the flash drive too but I copied it onto the Avast induced problematic laptop.

Yes, so the aswClear.exe program is probably the only way to uninstall the Avast anti virus. It is a unique uninstall procedure but obviously troublesome for the uninformed user. Anyway, I tried to run the program on windows & it gave me an error message. Yes, I should pay more attention to the uninstall instructions. Ok, run it when Windows is in Safe Mode. Fine, so it's like restart the computer, press F8 vigorously, & etc.

The correct way to start Windows XP in safe mode:

Using the F8 Method

Restart your computer.

When the machine first starts again it will generally list some equipment that is installed in your machine, amount of memory, hard drives installed etc. At this point you should gently tap the F8 key repeatedly until you are presented with a Windows XP Advanced Options menu.

Select the option for Safe Mode using the arrow keys.

Then press enter on your keyboard to boot into Safe Mode.

Do whatever tasks you require and when you are done reboot to boot back into normal mode.

Take a look at starting all types of Windows in safe mode for more information. Immediately after the Avast anti virus un-installation, my sister's laptop regained normal functions. Avast anti virus needs to be more user-friendly, not to mention computer friendly as well!

I had been using Avast for over a year with no problems, then I decided just last week 1st May 2011 to up date it, this I did and a week of hell it gave me.
On reboot the pc just as the xp logo starts to appear it would reboot again and again and again.

I had the pc to bits and cleaned most everything and vacuumed out the dust, and tried again still the same, well it was bank holiday May day Monday so when the Library was open I went and booked a free play on their pc's.

By the way I did not have a back-up disc, in the Library I got straight into google and put in keeps rebooting and there was so many other users with the same problem.
All I was looking for was the way into safe mode, and I got it from this search F8 KEY, yes just as it starts to boot up press the F8 KEY and you will see all the options I went straight for SAFE MODE, JUST SAFE MODE OK, and the pc started to boot like normal.

I must say that before I loaded the new Avast I did set a new restore point, so

Rich, I am guessing that the school knows how to go about the Avast! issue. I hope you don't have any problems using Avast!. You too, Saikat. Avast! is abnormally fussy for me to tolerate.
