Avastin Addition for Ovarian Cancer Treatments

Extensive clinical trail results presented at the 46th Annual Meeting of the American Cancer Society of Clinical Oncology. The research was administered by a network of researchers referred to the Gynecologic Oncology Group (GOG) sponsored by United States National Cancer Institute.

The results from this trail research has shown that adding bevacizumab called Avastin to regular front running chemotherapy for women with progressed ovarian cancer then pursuing a provisional dose of the drug subsequently greatly boosts progression free survival. Women taking this new treatment procedure had no signs of their disease becoming worse for 14.1 months and 10.3 for women who just revived the standard treatments.

This is the first time in a trail that a that a molecular targeted agent has been in part of a approved plan for the treatment of advanced ovarian cancer. It is also a first for maintenance dosing approach using any therapy that has been earmarked for disease. Continuing studying of the trail data possibly can provide understanding into genetically assigned subgroups of patients who gained more than others, leading to the chance of more personalized and greater effectual treatments for ovarian cancer in the years to come.

Ovarian cancer is still one of the deadliest cancers for women today. Lead researcher Robert A. Burger, M.D., and the director of the W omen's Cancer Center at Fox Chase Cancer Center, commented that this clinical advancement is greatly welcomed. That before this was discovered ovarian cancer patients could only receive treatments with surgery and chemotherapy and then followed up by nearly toxic agents. This new trail research provides a third type concentrated therapy for patients allowing for more better advancement in the years ahead.

The American Cancer Society has statistics yielding about 22,000 new cases of ovarian cancer to be diagnosed this year and unfortunately about 15,000 women will succumb to this disease. The eighth most common cancer among women is ovarian excluding skin cancers. It is the fifth type cancer that leads to death among women more than any other cancer of the female reproductive system.

The trial named GOG-0218, had an enrollment of 1,873, formerly untreated women with progressed diseases from 336 places in four countries (United States, Canada, South Korea and Japan). These women without any particular order were delegated one of the three treatment rituals: standard chemotherapy plus a placebo, followed by placebo maintenance treatment for up to 10 added months, standard chemotherapy plus addition of Avastin followed by placebo maintenance and standard chemotherapy treatment plus Avastin and followed with Avastin maintenance. The form and occurrence rates of side effects from Avastin were like those witnessed in past cancer studies with use of the drug.

Avastin, is an angiogenesis inhibitor, in layman's terms it is a drug that confines the growth of the tumor by hampering with the formation of new blood vessels to supply the tumor with needed nutrients. It discourages the function of a natural occurring protein named for short VEGF, which is overly developed in many of the cancers and activates new blood vessel formation.

More and more women today are seeking alternative treatments for cancer in addition to the conventional ones. Some of these therapies are listed below:

Naturopathic

It is a practice of diagnose, treatment and prevention of illness. Some of the approaches included may include nutrition, botanical medicines and homeopathic medicines.

Chinese Medicine

Uses many types of herbs and treatments. One such treatment for ovarian cancer is ginger treatment. Recent studies have shown that ginger treatment of cultured ovarian cancer cells activated deep growth prevention in all cell lines tested. The conclusion of researchers indicated that ginger used as a dietary agent could possibly have great potential in treatment and prevention of ovarian cancer.

Acupuncture

Has been studied in clinical trails. The results have shown that women who received acupuncture treatments pain and nausea did decrease and showed improvement in their well being. It also managed to relieve symptoms of anxiety and depression.
